On December 19 2024, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) hosted the 21st Annual Health Summit with the theme “Transforming Healthcare for Viksit Bharat 2047” in New Delhi (Delhi).
- The summit featured an exhibition highlighting the latest medical innovations and technologies, paving the way for a future-ready healthcare system.
- Union Minister of State (MoS) Anupriya Patel, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Chemicals & Fertilizers highlighted the importance of MedTech (Medical Technology) vision at the Health Summit.

i.Union Secretary, Punya Salila Srivastava , MoHFW, Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman, CII National Healthcare Council and Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Medanta – The Medicity; Dilip Jose, Co-Chairman, CII and MD & Chief Executive Officer(CEO), Manipal Health Enterprises Private Limited; Sunita Reddy, MD, Apollo Hospital Group and Amita Sarkar, Deputy Director General(DG), CII were present at the summit.
Highlights of 21st CII Annual Health Summit:
i.During the summit, the National Medical Device Policy and schemes for strengthening infrastructure, promoting research and skill development in the MedTech sector were launched by the government..
ii.The government has allocated Rs 400 crore for the establishment of medical device parks and Rs 500 crore for supporting the MedTech industry’s growth through research and innovation.
- The aim is to achieve ‘‘Universal Health Coverage’’ and position India as a global leader by 2047.
iii.The government has taken steps to boost exports and industry collaboration, with the creation of the Export Promotion Council for Medical Devices (EPCMD) and the reconstitution of the National Medical Devices Promotion Council (NMDPC).
- The government is also encouraging Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven innovations to address healthcare challenges and improve delivery.
iii.Union MoS Anupriya Patel also introduced a Rs 400 crore scheme to promote Medical Device Parks in Uttar Pradesh (UP), Tamil Nadu (TN), Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Himachal Pradesh (HP) to boost domestic production.
- Additionally, the Promotion of Research in Pharma-Medtech Sector(PRIP) and the Scheme for Strengthening the Medical Device Industry with Rs.500 crore funding also launched to foster innovation, enhance manufacturing capabilities, support skill development, and promote industry growth.
Key Focus Areas of National Medical Device Policy:
i.Government’s Focus on AI in Healthcare: To revolutionize Artificial Intelligence (AI) healthcare by addressing challenges and creating new opportunities for innovation.
ii.Boosting Medical Device Exports:To increase medical device exports through the Export Promotion Council for Medical Devices (EPCMD) and the National Medical Devices Promotion Council (NMDPC).
iii.Private Sector’s Role in Healthcare Accessibility:To emphasize the importance of public-private partnerships (PPP) to make healthcare more accessible and affordable, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
Points to Note:
i.India’s medical device sector, valued at around USD 14 billion, is projected to grow to USD 30 billion by 2030, making India one of the top 20 medical device markets globally.
ii.As of 2024, India ranks as the 4th-largest medical device market in Asia, following Japan, China, and South Korea.
iii.India’s MedTech sector has increased from USD 1.4 billion in 2020 to USD 4 billion in 2024, driven by Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and supportive regulations.
