On April 17 2025, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance (MoF) unveiled a Rs 150 commemorative coin to celebrate the 150 years of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Asia’s oldest stock exchange and one of the largest in the world at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- Apart from this coin, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also launched BSE@150 Logo and BSE 150 Index, a new benchmark index designed to monitor the performance of the top 150 listed companies based on market capitalization and liquidity.
- Union Minister of State (MoS) Pankaj Chaudhary and Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) were among the key dignitaries.

This is the eighth commemorative coin released by the India Government Mint, Mumbai(Maharashtra) in 2025.

- Metal Composition: Quaternary alloy comprising 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc

- Obverse Design: Features the Lion Capital of Ashoka with the inscription “सत्यमेव जयते” below, flanked by “भारत” and “INDIA” on the left and right periphery, respectively. Below the Ashoka Lion Capital, the rupee symbol “₹” and the denomination “150” are inscribed in international numerals.
- Reverse Design: Depicts the BSE@150 logo along with inscriptions in Hindi and English: “1875 से निवेशकों को समर्थ बनाते हुए” and “Empowering Investors Since 1875.”
About BSE@150 Logo:
- Color Palette: The logo features a dynamic gradient flame transitioning from deep red to bright yellow. This flame, reminiscent of a ‘Diya’ or torch, represents BSE’s role in illuminating the path forward for India’s capital markets .
- Blue Hue: The deep blue elements signify the sky and ocean, representing knowledge, integrity, and trustworthiness, qualities that BSE has cultivated over its 150-year history
- Inspiration from Pancha Bhuta: The logo’s design draws inspiration from the five elements of nature: Akash (Space), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water), and Prithvi (Earth).
About BSE 150 Index:
- Composition: The index comprises 150 mid-cap stocks, selected based on market capitalization and liquidity criteria.
- Purpose: It serves as a barometer for the mid-cap segment of the Indian equity market, providing insights into the performance of emerging companies with significant growth potential.
- Investment Tool: The BSE 150 MidCap Index is utilized by fund managers and investors as a benchmark for mid-cap mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), aiding in portfolio construction and performance evaluation.
Key Points:
i.While addressing the event, the Union Minister appreciated BSE’s technological advancements and its important role in India’s economic development.
- She further highlighted that BSE processes orders worth Rs 1,500 crore on daily basis, reflecting the seamless integration of cutting-edge technology.
ii.The market capitalization of BSE has reached to Rs 400 lakh crore, thereby placing it among world’s top stock exchanges
