On 23rd April 2020, The United Nations English Language Day and Spanish Language Day are celebrated every year as an initiative of the Department of Global Communication to promote the use of official languages and to ensure that the goals and actions of the UN are understood by all the possible public.UN English Language Day:
i.The UN English Language Day is celebrated on the 23rd April every year which is traditionally observed as the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare.
ii.The celebration of English language day is aimed to educate the people on the history, culture and the achievements associated with the language and to encourage the books, poetry and the literature exchange like activities to promote the language.
iii.The English Language Programme (ELP) at the UN promotes linguistic balance by improving the English language skills among the staff of the secretariat. The course comprises 8 levels to improve proficiency and communication.
UN Spanish Language Day:
i.The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) founded the UN Spanish Language Day in 2010 to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity.
ii.The April 23rd was chosen to commemorate the death of Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra, greatest writer in Spanish who died in 1616.
iii.This day is celebrated by reading the works of Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra such as Don Quixote, The dialogue of the Dogs or The Little Gypsy Girl and exploring the Spanish literature.
