On 5th January 2022 The Power Ministry successfully completed 7 years of distributing and selling LED lights under its flagship Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) programme.

  • UJALA initiative is the world’s largest zero subsidy domestic lighting programme with more than 78 crore LEDs distributed across the country.

Facts:

i.As on 5th January 2022, 47,778 Million(~48 Billion(Bn)) kilowatt hour (kWh) per annum energy has been saved.

ii.The demand of 9,565 Megawatt (MW) has been avoided, along with 386 crore tonnes of reduction in CO2 emissions.

iii.Under UJALA, the domestic manufacturing of LED bulbs has increased from 1 lakh per month to 40 million per month

Features of UJALA:

i.It ensures transparency and encourages competition by e-procurement of goods and services that results in decline transaction cost and time with enhanced process efficiency.

ii.The cost of LED bulbs has come down by 85 percent, from Rs. 300-350 a bulb to Rs. 70-80 which resulted in massive energy savings.

iii.UJALA has also distributed energy efficient and cost saving lighting to the middle class and lower middle-class consumers.

Procurement strategy:

i.The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the implementing agency’s innovative procurement strategy has resulted in the Unique Selling Point (USP) of UJALA program.

  • As a part of its inclusive growth strategy, EESL has also enrolled Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for distributing LED bulbs to lower income communities.

ii.It also enables to bring down the cost of LEDs for the retail segment through bulk procurement which has been reduced by almost 90 percent between 2014 and 2017, from Rs. 310 to Rs. 38.

Note – UJALA program is now a part of Leadership case study in Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad and also stands in consideration for being included in the curriculum of the Harvard Business School.
