According to the ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023’, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (IISc Bengaluru) in Karnataka has secured the number one spot among Indian universities.
- IISc Bengaluru is Ranked No. 1 among Indian institutions, falling into the 251-300 band after spending three years in the 301-350 band.
- It is also the only university in India to make the top 300 list.
With 75 institutes included in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023, India is the fifth most represented country on the list. In 2020, 56 universities took part, up from 31 in 2017.
Key Highlights: Other Indian Universities Made to The 2023 Ranking List Â
i.Five Indian universities made it into the top 500 universities in the world —IISc Bengaluru; JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research; Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences; Alagappa University—up one group from 2021, and Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU).
ii.Among the six institutions that debuted in the THE 2023 rankings, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (351-400 band), a private university, received the highest ranking. It moved up to joint second place in India.
iii.India now has nine institutions in the top 600, up from six in 2022.
iv.Last featured in the 2020 edition, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, Assam, returned in 2023 in the 1001–1200 band.
Note: Seven IITs, including Delhi, Bombay, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee, made the decision to withdraw from the THE World University Rankings in 2020 due to concerns about transparency.

Times Higher World University Education Rankings 2023
The ‘THE World University Rankings 2023’ feature 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions, which is an increase of 137 over 2022. This makes the rankings the most comprehensive and diversified list of university rankings ever.
- The performance of an institution in four areas—teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook—is measured by 13 performance indicators.
The 2023 Rankings provide insight into the progressing global higher education landscape.
- For the seventh consecutive year, the University of Oxford is ranked first in the world.
- With 177 institutions, the United States(US) is the most represented country overall, in addition to being the most represented in the top 200 (58).
- The number of US universities in the top 100 continues to decline, from 43 in 2018 to 34 in 2023.

Key Highlights with respect to Asia
i.Japan tops the Asian countries with 117 ranked universities, followed by China with 95 and India with 75.
- University of Tokyo remains Japan’s top ranked university in 39th place.
ii.With 669 universities participating, Asia is the most represented continent, along with Europe (639, up 50 from 589 in 2022).
- Tsinghua University in China, ranked 16th overall, is the top-ranked university in Asia.

In September 2022, the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), Chennai, Tamil Nadu, became the 1st Indian educational institution to join the New York (NY)-based International Business Machines (IBM) Quantum Network to promote and advance quantum computing skills development and research in India.
