TIME magazine names Donald Trump as ‘Person of the Year’ for 2024On December 12 2024, New York (the United States of America (USA))based TIME magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump as its Person of the Year for 2024, recognising his deep influence on American politics and the country’s role in the world.

  • He was previously named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2016.
  • The other world personalities short listed as finalists, including: Elon Musk, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla; Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister (PM) of Israel; Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, US Vice President Kamala Harris, among others.

Note: American Pop singer Taylor Alison Swift was named TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year 2023.

About TIME’s Person of the Year title:

i.Since 1927, TIME magazine has been naming “Person of the Year” title (which was previously named as ‘Man of the Year’ till 1999), recognizing a person/ a group/ movement that shaped the world for better or worse in the last 12 months.

ii.In 2020, Democratic President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were jointly named as TIME’s “Person of the Year”.

iii.Some of the previous winners of TIME’s Person of the Year title are:Former US President Barack Obama (2008); CEO of Meta (formerly known as Facebook) Mark Zuckerberg (2010); President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy (2022); Former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel (2015), among others.

i.Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946 at New York City, the USA. He is a renowned American businessman, politician and the founder of Trump Organisation, global real estate company.

ii.Trump contested his 1st ever US Presidential election and elected as the 45th US President in November 2016.

iii.On November 5 2024, Donald Trump, Republican nominee won US Presidential Election 2024 and officially assume the office as 47th US President on 20th January, 2025.

American Basketball Player Caitlin Clark named TIME’s Athlete of the Year 2024:

i.Caitlin Clark (22 years-old), an American basketball player has been named as the TIME Magazine’s Athlete of the Year for 2024.

  • With this, she becomes the 1st Women National Basket Association (WNBA) player to receive the award and 2nd woman athlete after Olympic Gold medalist Simon Biles (2021).

ii.In 2024, Clark joined the Indiana Fever team, following her impressive career at Iowa.

  • During her inaugural season with Indiana Fever in 2024, she won the Rookie of the Year award and was selected to the All-WNBA first team, thus becoming the 1st rookie to do since 2008.

CEO of AMD Lisa Tzwu-Fang Su Named TIME’s CEO of the Year for 2024:

i.Lisa Tzwu-Fang Su (55 years old), CEO and Chair of California (the USA)-based Advanced Micro Devices Inc.(AMD), a semiconductor design company has been named as the TIME Magazine’s CEO of the Year for 2024.

ii.Ever since she was appointed CEO of the company in 2014, AMD has transformed into a USD 210 billion tech giant and also the stock price of the company has increased to nearly 50-fold.

iii.Under her leadership, the company has made significant strides in Central Processing Units (CPUs) and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), consolidating its position in both consumer and enterprise markets.

Note: In 2023, American entrepreneur Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI was named CEO of the Year.
