World Statistics DayThe United Nations (UN) Third World Statistics Day was observed on 20th October. It is observed to emphasise the importance of data authenticity and credibility. The World Statistics day is observed every Five Years

i.The theme of Third World Statistics Day is – “Connecting the world with Data we can trust”.

ii.The Day will be celebrated across the world under the collaborative endeavour and guidance of the United Nations Statistics Commission.

Key Points:

i.This year’s theme reflects the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and public good in national statistical systems. 

ii.The United Nations Statistical Commission proposed celebrating 20th October 2010 as World Statistics Day during the 41st Session in February 2010. The First World Statistics Day was observed on 20th October, 2010. 

iii.The UN adopted Statistics day acknowledging the production of reliable, timely statistics for measuring country’s progress and for monitoring implementation of Millennium Development Goals. 

National Statistics Day in India:

i.In India the National Statistics Day is observed on 29th June of every year to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis

ii.Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was a pioneer in the field of economic planning and statistical development in India after Independence.

iii.He is the founder of Indian National Statistical System.
