The third Tortoise Festival was organized by Assam’s Dima Hasao Environment and Forest Department on the banks of Hajong lake. The festival is celebrated to create awareness among the people of the neighboring villages about the safety of the endangered tortoise species available in the area.
Hajong lake is a unique and only natural tortoise habitat situated in Assam. In these areas some endangered species of tide-water tortoise of north-east India are still living. At present, around 400 to 500 tortoises are reportedly dwelling in the Hajong lake.
