Social Justice & Empowerment Minister TC Gehlot launches website for Nasha Mukt Bharat AbhiyaanOn occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (26th June), Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Thawaarchand Gehlot launched a website for the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) scheme to root out the threat of drug abuse.

i.To commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, MoSJE organized a 6-day Nasha Mukt Bharat Summit from June 21-26, 2021.

  • The website for NMBA contains detailed information about the scheme and its activities, it provides IEC (Information, Education & Communication) resource material and information on institutions set up by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJE) with the aim of Drug Demand reduction.

ii.MoSJE is the nodal ministry for Drug Demand Reduction. It implements various programmes for drug abuse prevention across India.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA)

i.NMBA or ‘Drugs-Free India Campaign’ was launched on 15th August, 2020 across 272 districts of India, which were found to be the most vulnerable districts in India for drug usage.

  • The focus points of the Campaign are preventive, mass education and sensitization, capacity building of service providers, positive partnership with educational institutions,rehabilitation and counselling facilities.

ii.The Ministry aims to declare at least 100 districts drug free as part of the 75 years of Indian Independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav) celebrations, which will continue till August 15, 2023.

Drug Problems in India

i.According to the National Comprehensive Survey conducted by MoSJE, there are more than 60 million drug users in India, of which majority of them are in the age group of 10-17 years.

ii.MoSJE financially assists Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) which are involved in implementation of drug-free India campaign under its National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) scheme.
