Tennis: Italy’s Jannik Sinner won Men’s Singles Title at US Open 2024; Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka won Women’s Singles Title

The US Open Tennis 2024 from August 19–September 8 new

The United States (US) Open Tennis Championships 2024, commonly called the US Open 2024, was held from 19th August 2024 to 8th September 2024 on outdoor hard courts at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York, the United States of America(USA).

i.Jannik Sinner of Italy (World No. 1) won the Men’s Singles title of the US Open 2024 by defeating Taylor Fritz of the United States of America (USA) (World no. 12) in the finals held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, USA.

ii.Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka won the Women’s Singles title by defeating USA’s Jessica Pegula in the finals.

About US Open 2024: 

i.The 2024 US Open was the 144th edition of the US Open.

ii.The total prize money of US Open 2024 was pegged at USD 75 million. The men’s and women’s singles champions will earn USD 3.6 million each.

Jannik Sinner won Men’s Singles Title: 

i.This victory marks Jannik Sinner’s 1st US Open singles title and 2nd Grand Slam. He previously won the 2024 Australian Open in January 2024. he also became the first Italian man to win the US Open.

ii.At 23 years of age, Sinner is the 4th different and youngest man to win both hard-court Grand Slam titles (Australian Open and US Open) in a single season(2024).

iii.He has won a total of 16 singles titles on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour, including two majors – US open and Australian open.

Note: Flavia Pennetta was the first Italian Women to win the Women’s singles title in US Open. she won the title in 2015.

Aryna Sabalenka won Women’s Singles Title: 

i.This victory marks Aryna’s 1st US Open singles title and her 3rd Grand Slam title. She previously won the 2023 and 2024 Australian Opens.

ii.She became the 4th player to win the Cincinnati and US Open women’s singles title in the same season in the Open Era, after Kim Clijsters (2010), Serena Williams (2014) and Coco Gauff (2023).

iii.She has also won two major doubles titles 2019 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open partnering with Elise Mertens of Belgium.

iv.She has won 22 career titles, 16 in singles and 6 in doubles. She is currently ranked at number 2 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking.Aryna Sabalenka win women’s singles titles & Jannik Sinner win men’s singles titles (1)Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson won the men’s doubles title: 

Australia’s  Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson won the Men’s Doubles title at the US Open 2024 after defeating Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the finals.

  • With the win, Purcell and Thompson became the first all-Australian team to win a US Open men’s doubles title since Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996.
  • This marks Jordan Thompson’s 1st Grand Slam title and Purcell’s 2nd Grand Slam title. Purcell has previously won the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon 2022 with compatriot Matt Ebden.

Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok won the Women’s Doubles title

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko and Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok won the women’s doubles title at the US Open 2024 with a victory over Chinese-French pairing Zhang Shaui and Kristina Mladenovic.

  • This is the first major title for the duo as a team.
  • This marks Jelena Ostapenko’s 2nd Grand Slam. She previously won the Women’s Singles title at the French Open in 2017.
  • This marks Lyudmyla Kichenok’s 2nd major title. She won the mixed doubles title alongside Mate Pavic of Croatia at the Wimbledon in 2023.

Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori won Mixed Doubles title

i.Italian pair of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori secured the mixed doubles title at the US Open after defeating the American duo of Taylor Townsend and Donald Young in the finals.

ii.This marks the duo’s first Grand Slam title in the mixed doubles category.

iii.Sara Errani has previously won five Grand Slam doubles titles all with Roberta Vinci (2012 Roland-Garros, 2012 US Open, 2013 Australian Open, 2014 Australian Open, 2014 Wimbledon).

iv.They have also become the first all-Italian pair to secure a Mixed Doubles Grand Slam title in tennis history.

i.The 2024 US Open was marks the duo’s third major tournament as a pair, following their appearances at Wimbledon 2024 and the Paris Olympics.

ii.Errani paired with Jasmine Paolini to win the Paris Olympics gold medal in women’s doubles.
