Telangana has stood first among other states in India in the list of the highest number of Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus villages under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase-II programme till December 31, 2021.
- Around 13,737 villages out of 14,200 villages in Telangana are on the ODF Plus list, which stands at 96.74 percent.
- Telangana is followed by Tamil Nadu with 4,432 villages, next by Karnataka with 1,511 villages and Gujarat took the 17th position with only 83 villages (0.45 percent).

Key Highlights:
i.The Telangana government has enacted a new Telangana Panchayat Raj Act to ensure holistic development of villages and Sanitation drives are being carried out through the Palle Pragathi programme in villages.
- The Palle Pragathi program has been launched to improve the quality of life including sanitation, greenery and hygiene in the rural areas.
ii.A secretary has been posted in every panchayat for smooth execution of welfare programmes to ensure good governance in villages.
iii.Multi-purpose workers have been appointed to maintain proper sanitation in villages.
Efforts undertaken by Telangana Government:
i.The magic soak pits and drainage facilities have also been arranged in all houses for proper liquid waste management.
ii.The tractor trolleys with partitions to collect dry and wet waste have been provided with transportation of the garbage to segregation-cum-compost sheds. There are 12,769 dedicated compost sheds in all gram panchayats.
iii.The tankers have been provided to water the plants along with Vermicompost made out of wet litter is provided for the manure in green belt regions
About Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase-II:
i.Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) – Grameen (G) Phase-II was approved in February 2020 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti to be implemented between 2020-21 and 2024-25 in a mission mode with an outlay of Rs 1,40,881 crores.
ii.The SBM-G Phase – II focuses on ODF Plus, which includes ODF sustainability and provides adequate facilities for Solid, Liquid & plastic waste management (SLWM) in rural India.
iii.The fund sharing pattern between Centre and States will be 90:10 for North-Eastern States and Himalayan States and Union Territory (UT) of Jammu & Kashmir; 60:40 for other States; and 100:0 for other UTs.
