In April 2025, Anumula Revanth Reddy, Chief Minister(CM) of Telangana, signed Letters of Intent (LoI) with several Japanese companies to establish an ‘Eco Town’ in Hyderabad, Telangana. This initiative focuses on recycling, waste management, environmental restoration, and promoting a circular economy.
- The agreements were signed during CM Anumula Revanth Reddy’s visit to Kitakyushu, Japan from April 16 to 22, 2025.
- During the visit he inaugurated the Telangana pavilion at the Osaka World Expo in Kansai, Japan. With this, Telangana became the first Indian state to participate in the World Expo 2025.
Note: Kitakyushu is renowned for its efforts in environmental sustainability and serves as a model for the proposed Eco Town.
Key Highlights:
i.Participating Companies: The LoIs were signed with leading Japanese firms, including EX Research Institute Limited, P9 Limited Liability Company (LLC), Nippon Steel Engineering Co., Ltd., New Chemical Trading Co., Ltd and Amita Holdings Co., Ltd..
ii.Eco Town Objectives: The ‘Eco Town’ aims to implement the zero-emission concept, recycling all industrial waste for use in other sectors, thereby creating an environmentally harmonized socio-economy.
- The primary objective is to create an environmentally friendly and sustainable community in Hyderabad.
iii.Future Collaborations: Discussions included establishing a sister city agreement between Hyderabad and Kitakyushu, initiating direct flights between the two cities, and setting up a Japanese language school in Hyderabad to strengthen cultural and economic ties.
TTDI Invests Rs. 562 Crore in Telangana:
During his official visit to Japan, Telangana CM Anumula Revanth Reddy,held strategic meetings with top executives from leading Japanese corporations, including Toshiba Corporation, Sony Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
- These discussions aimed to explore potential collaborations in sectors such as electronics, automotive, and information technology.
Key Points:
i.During the meeting, Toshiba Transmission Distribution Systems (India) Pvt Ltd (TTDI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tokyo(Japan) based Toshiba Corporation has announced an investment of Rs. 562 crore to set up a new manufacturing facility for surge arresters and expand its existing production units for transformers and gas-insulated switchgear at its plant in Rudraram, Telangana.
ii.A Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) formalising the investment was signed by special Chief Secretary(CS) Jayesh Ranjan and Chairman and Managing Director(CMD), TTDI Telangana, Hiroshi Furuta.
iii.The proposed project will incorporate cutting-edge technologies to enhance the production capacity and meet the growing demand in the transmission and distribution (TCD) sector.
Note: Currently, TTDI operates 2 manufacturing units at its Rudraram facility near Hyderabad.
