According to the Export Preparedness Index(EPI) 2022 for States and Union Territories(UTs), the 3rd edition of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) report, Tamil Nadu has topped the Index with an overall score of 80.89.
- Maharashtra with 78.20 at 2nd place, Karnataka with 76.36 at 3rd place and Gujarat with 73.22 at 4th place are the top performers in EPI 2022 in all categories of states.
- The report, which presents a comprehensive analysis of India’s export performance in FY22, was released by Suman Bery, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, on 17th July 2023.
- The EPI 2022 was prepared by NITI Aayog in association with the Institute for Competitiveness(IFC).
Note: The report highlights that Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have the highest number of Geographical Indications (GI) products being exported.
About EPI:
i.The EPI 2022 Report evaluates the performance of the states across four pillars:
- Policy pillar.
- Business Ecosystem pillar.
- Export Ecosystem pillar.
- Export Performance pillar.
ii.These 4 pillars are further based on ten sub-pillars: Export Promotion Policy; Institutional Framework; Business Environment; Infrastructure; Transport Connectivity; Export Infrastructure; Trade Support; R&D Infrastructure; Export Diversification; and Growth Orientation.
iii.The index utilise 56 indicators that captures export preparedness of States and UTs in terms of exports at both the state and district-level.
Highlights of TN’s Exports:
i.Kanchipuram, Chennai, Tiruppur are the top three among the exporting districts of Tamil Nadu.
ii.Engineering goods is the top export of Kanchipuram. The district is also the leading exporters of Silk and its finished products.
iii.The primary exports of Chennai includes petroleum products, engineering goods, and drugs and pharmaceuticals.
iv.In terms of exports value, Tiruppur is ranked 22nd in India. The major exports of Tiruppur includes, raw material exports, cotton products and handloom products.

i.TN’s enhanced performance across all 4 pillars has ensured its top position on the overall index.

Highlights of EPI 2022:
i.According to EPI 2022, most of the coastal states of India have performed well.
ii.Haryana(63.65), Telangana(61.36) and Uttar Pradesh(61.23) are the top performers in landlocked states category.
iii.Uttarakhand (59.13) has topped among Himalayan States followed by Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.
iv.Goa(51.58) has topped among Union Territories followed by Jammu & Kashmir(J&K), Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar and Ladakh.
v.The report stated that among 680 districts, the top 100 districts contributes to around 87% of total exports of India.
vi.Gujarat’s Jamnagar has toped the list of Districts followed by Surat, Mumbai Suburban, Mumbai, Pune, Bharuch, Kanchipuram, Ahmedabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar and Bengaluru Urban.
- With 8 districts, Gujarat has the highest number of districts in the top 25 export districts in India.
Note: To promote export, 674 districts have formed a District Export Promotion Committee, and 557 have formulated a District Export Action Plan.
