On 5th September 2024, TIME, the New York (the United States of America-USA)based Magazine, released “TIME 100 Most Influential People in AI 2024”.
- Sundar Pichai, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Google and Alphabet, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Anil Kapoor, Renowned Actor are among leaders from India or of Indian descent featured on the list.
About TIME 100 Most Influential People in AI 2024:
i.This is the 2nd edition of TIME 100 Most Influential People in AI, recognizing the 100 most influential people shaping the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
ii.The list has categorized the influential people into 4 different categories namely, Leaders, Innovators, Shapers and Thinkers.
Indian People on the List:
i.Sundar Pichai has been featured under the “Leaders” category along with Satya Nadella, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Microsoft Corporation and Rohit Prasad, Senior Vice President (SVP) and head scientist of Artificial General Intelligence, Amazon.
- Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella are among the 15 Indian or Indian-origin People featured on the list.
ii.Nandan Nilkeni (69 year-old), the co-founder of Infosys and co-founder and chairman of EkStep has been placed under ‘Shapers ’ category. He has been recognised for his exceptional contributions to India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), which earned him nicknames like ‘India’s Bill Gates’.
- Also, TIME magazine took note of Nilkeni led India’s Aadhar program, the world’s largest biometric identity card program.
iii.Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw (54-year-old)has also been placed under “Shapers” category. As per TIME Magazine, under the leadership of Ashwini Vaishnaw, India hopes to become one of the top 5 countries for semiconductor manufacturing, a key component for modern AI systems within the next 5 years.
iv.Renowned Indian Actor, Anil Kapoor (67-years-old) has been included in TIME’s AI list under the ‘Shapers’ category following a landmark victory in September 2023 over unauthorized AI use of his likeness.
v.Other Indians or Indian-origin leaders on the list are: Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity (Innovators category), Dwarkesh Patel, host of Dwarkesh Podcast (Thinker category), Shiv Rao, Co-founder and CEO of Abridge (Innovators), Amandeep Singh Gill, United Nations (UN) Secretary General’s Envoy on Technology (Shapers category) and Anant Vijay Singh, Product lead at Proton (Innovators category).
Key Highlights of 2024 List:
i.Some of the prominent industry leaders like: Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), OpenAI , Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, are featured on the list for 2nd time.
ii.Some of the prominent women leaders featured on the list are: Amba Kak, Co-executive Director, of AI Now Institute, Arati Prabhakar, Director of the US Office of Science and Technology Policy and Divya Siddharth, Co-founders of Collective Intelligence Project, among others.
iii.The list features 40 Chief Operating Officers (CEOs), founders and co-founders like, Mark Zuckerberg, Founder of Meta (formerly Facebook); Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia among others.
iv.Francesca Mani(15-year-old) who advocates across the USA for protection for victims of deepfakes, has been recognised as the youngest individual on the TIME 100 AI 2024 list.
v.Andrew Yao (77-year-old), a famous computer scientist who is shaping a new generation of AI minds at colleges across China, has been recognised as the oldest individual on the list.
