Singapore Investment Conclave: TN Government Signed 6 MoUs with Singapore institutions

Tamil Nadu signs six MoUs with SingaporeOn 24th May 2023, the Tamil Nadu (TN) Government agencies signed 6 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with institutions and companies based in Singapore during the Investment Conclave – Tamil Nadu Investor’s first port of Call at Singapore.

  • The MoUs were signed in the presence of M K Stalin, Chief Minister (CM) of Tamil Nadu and S. Iswaran, Minister for Transport and Minister in charge of Trade Relations, Singapore.

Note: 

  • CM participated in the event as a part of his 2 national tours of  Singapore and Japan aiming to attract investors towards TN ahead of the global Investors Summit in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in January 2024.
  • This marks his first-ever visit to Singapore.

Key People from Tamil Nadu:

T.R.B. Rajaa- Minister for Industries Department, Tamil Nadu; V. Irai Anbu-  Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu; Periasamy Kumaran – Indian High Commissioner to Singapore and other senior officials.

Details of the Six MoUs:

i. Guidance Tamil Nadu, the investment promotion agency of the State government, signed an MoU with the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries for research and development (R&D) initiatives, a collaboration between universities, government and private players, as well as assistance in exports from companies in TN.

ii. Guidance Tamil Nadu also signed an MoU with Hi-P International Private Limited, for the manufacture of electronic spare parts on an investment of Rs 312 crore. This will potentially generate employment opportunities for over 700 persons.

iii. Guidance Tamil Nadu also signed an MoU with the Singapore University of Technology and Design for technology transfer.

iv. The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limitied (SIPCOT) signed an MoU with Singapore-India Partnership Office (SIPO) for cooperation between the two.

v. Another MoU was signed between SIPO and FaMe TN (Facilitating Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of Tamil Nadu) and Tamil Nadu Startup and Innovation Mission (TANSIM) towards technical education and start-ups.

vi. The Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation signed an MoU with ITE (Information technology equipment) Education Services for technology transfer and skill development.

Highlights of CM’s visit: 

i.TN CM and Singapore’s Transport Minister S Iswaran discussed on improving economic and bilateral ties between India and Singapore. He also met the Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Temasek, Kim Yin Won, CEO of Sembcorp and Sanjeev Dasgupta CEO of CapitaLand.

ii.During his meeting with the Tamil diaspora in Singapore, CM Stalin announced that the TN government will construct a Memorial for Lee Kuan Yew, the first Prime Minister(PM) of Singapore who is also known as the founding father of Singapore,  in Mannargudi, Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu.

  • The memorial will include a statue and a library.
