Shaheed Diwas 2022 March 23

Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyr’s Day, is annually observed in India on 23rd March to pay tribute to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev who were hanged to death in 1931 in the Central Jail at Lahore (now in Pakistan). The day also aims to remember all the freedom fighters who fought to protect our country and lost their lives in the line of duty to the nation. 

  • Shaheed Diwas 2022 is being organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) by focussing on the theme ‘Tribute to Revolutionaries’.

Note: January 30, the day on which Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated is also observed as Shaheed Diwas. 

Background:

i.Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev attained martyrdom on 23rd March 1931. They were hanged to death by the British government at the Lahore Conspiracy case. 

ii.They were convicted of murdering deputy police superintendent John Saunders to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.

iii.They also threw a bomb inside the Central Assembly hall in New Delhi on 8th April 1929, to protest against the British rule in India. 

PM Modi inaugurates Biplobi Bharat Gallery at Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata, WB

On the occasion of Shaheed Diwas 2022, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister(PM) of India, virtually inaugurated the Biplobi Bharat Gallery at Victoria Memorial Hall at Kolkata, West Bengal(WB). 

  • The Biplobi Bharat Gallery is a part of the government’s commitment to preserve and enhance the heritage of West Bengal. 

Key People: Jagdeep Dhankhar Governor of West Bengal and G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Tourism were present during the event. 

Events:

i.As a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) will organise Shaheed Diwas in all 623 District NYKS across India. 

ii.The programs aim at instilling a sense of gratitude, pride, honour and duty among the young generation by celebrating the life, works and philosophy of these freedom fighters.
