Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body under Department of Science & Technology (DST) in partnership with Intel India has launched the 1st of its kind research initiative called ‘Fund for Industrial Research Engagement (FIRE)’ to advance deep tech-based research in India.
- It will help the Indian research community to pursue industry-relevant research opportunities in areas of deep technologies (like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Language (ML), cloud, edge, and security) which are novel, transformative and have a ground-breaking impact on a national & global scale.
- The main aim of the program is to strengthen academic research by collaborating with key Research & Development (R&D) organizations in India.
- ‘FIRE’ is a joint government and industry initiative with a co-funding mechanism.
Key Points
i.The initiative will bring together the industry and academia on a common platform to exchange new ideas and co-promote innovative research.
ii.Under the program, research projects which have breakthrough potential at a national or global level will be selected in every cycle (once or twice a year).
- Best researchers in academia will be supported with funding, mentoring, and industry connections.
iii.Promoting research in critical areas of science and engineering with Public-Private Partnerships has been elaborated in the draft Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2021.
