Sania Mirza, India’s Women Tennis player and first Indian to foray into the World Tennis Association (WTA)’sTop 50 rankings has been appointed as the UN Women’s Goodwill ambassador for South Asia on 25 th November 2014. She also will be the first South Asian women to be appointed as UN Women’s Goodwill ambassador for South Asia.She was appointed at the event organised for International Day To End Violence Against Women.
UN Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women deputy executive director Lakshmi Puri, presented the speech for the reason of crowning Sania as “Sania is a woman of achievement and represents girls’ and women’s struggle for equality”. She also quoted that many children dream her as the role model.
She has two Grand slams in doubles at her medal tally which are French Open 2009 and Australian open 2012. In both of these games she was paired with Mahesh Bhupathi. Padma Shri and Arjuna awards are honoured upon her for the achievements by the Indian Government.

Earlier this year, the United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has named British fashion designer Victoria Beckham as its international goodwill ambassador.
