Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (Jio), a subsidiary of Jio Platforms Ltd is constructing the largest international submarine cable system with India as the center of the submarine cable system. It is the 1st time in history of Fiber optic submarine telecommunications that India will be at the centre of the International network map.
i.The submarine cable system will consist of 2 subsea cable systems – India-Asia-Xpress (IAX) connecting India to Singapore, and India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) connecting India to the Middle East and Europe.
ii.The subsea system will provide more than 200 TBPS (TeraBytes Per Second) of capacity spanning over 16, 000 Kilometres.
iii.The subsea cable systems are being constructed to support the growing data consumption needs in India.
iv.Reliance Jio will partner with SubCom, an world-class submarine cable supplier and other global firms for constructing the cables.
IAX & IEX
i.IAX connects India to Asia Pacific Countries (with express connectivity from Mumbai and Chennai) to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. It is expected to be ready for service by 2023.
ii.IEX system will extend India’s connectivity to Italy, landing in Savona, and additional landings in the Middle East and North Africa. IEX is expected to be ready for service by 2024.
iii.The two systems are also connected to Reliance Jio global fiber network which will connect it to both the east and west coast of the US.
- Together the 2 systems will interconnect the world’s top interexchange points and content hubs for extension of service.
- They will enhance the ability of users to access content and cloud services inside and outside of India.
