The Quit India Movement Day, also known as August Kranti Diwas, is annually observed across India on August 08 to commemorate the anniversary of Quit India Movement launched on August 08, 1942, a historic movement in India’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule, demanding immediate withdrawal of British forces from the country under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

About Quit India Movement:

Failure of Cripps Mission: One of the key factors contributing to the launch of Quit India Movement was the result of the failure of the Cripps Mission in April 1942, which aimed to secure Indian cooperation during World War II (WW2).

Quit India Resolution: The resolution generally referred to as the ‘Quit India’ resolution was proposed by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and was seconded by Sardar Vallabhbhi Patel.

Passing of Resolution: The resolution was officially ratified at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting held at Gowalia Tank, Bombay, British India( now Mumbai, Maharashtra) on August 08, 1942.

  • During the AICC session, Mahatma Gandhi was named the leader of the struggle.

Bharat Chodo Andolan: The Quit India Movement, also known as August Kranti/ August Movement, or Bharat Chodo Andolan, was a massive civil disobedience movement led by Gandhi ji, to end the British rule in India immediately.

  • The movement started on August 09, 1942 following the British responded by arresting all the major leaders including Mahatma Gandhi.

Do or Die Slogan: Gandhiji gave the slogan ‘Do or Die’ (Karo ya Maro) in his speech at Gowalia Tank Maidan, now popularly known as August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai.

Heroine of 1942 : Aruna Asaf Ali, also referred to as the ‘Heroine of 1942 Quit India Movement’, ‘Queen of the August Revolution’, ‘Grand Old Lady of the Independence Movement’, hoisted the Indian flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan.

  • She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in  the  field of public affairs in 1992 and the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1997.

Phrase Quit India: The phrase ‘Quit India’ was coined by Yusuf Meherally, a socialist and trade unionist who served as Mayor of Mumbai. He also coined the slogan ‘Simon Go Back’.
