On 6th November 2024, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released the 16th edition of the ‘QS World University Ranking Asia 2025‘ which showed that Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) (75.4), New Delhi(Delhi), secured the top spot in India with the 44th position (from 46th in 2024) on the list.
- It was followed by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) (73.1), Mumbai, Maharashtra at the 48th position and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) (69.6), Chennai, Tamil Nadu at the 56th position and are the top 3 universities from India featured in the list.
- Peking University, Beijing(China) secured 1st spot in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025 with an overall score of 100 followed by the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong(China) and the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore on the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.
About QS World University Ranking – Asia 2025:
i.The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025 has assessed 984 institutions covering 25 countries in Eastern, Southern, South-Eastern and Central Asia.
- India stands as the most represented country in Asia’s higher education system with 162 ranked institutions, including 22 new additions.
- It is ahead of China, which has 135 universities, and Japan, which has 115.
ii.The ranking allows institutions and students to make direct comparisons on institutional performance within their region.
- Thus, it can be viewed in sub-regions: Central Asia (including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan), Eastern Asia (including mainland China, Japan and South Korea), South-Eastern Asia (including Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand), and Southern Asia (including India and Pakistan).
iii.The rankings are based on the scores obtained by the universities on 11 parameters namely- International Faculty, Staff with Doctor of Philosophy(PhD), Faculty Student Ratio, Inbound Exchange, Academic Reputation, Citations per Paper, Papers per Faculty, International Research Network, International Students, Outbound Exchange and Employer Reputation.
iv.There are 143 newly ranked institutions in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2025.
- The Education University of Hong Kong(EdUHK) ranked the highest of the new entrants at 212th spot with strong performance in Faculty Student and Citations per Paper.

Highlights of Indian Institutes:
i.A total of seven Indian institutes, including five IITs, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, and the University of Delhi, have secured top 100 ranks in the QS Asia University Rankings for 2025.
- IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay were the only 2 Indian institutions to have a place in the top 50 of the list.
ii.India has 21 institutes in Asia’s top 200 in which IIT Madras (56th), IIT Kharagpur (60th) and IISC, Bangalore (62nd) are listed on top.
iii.Among Indian institutes, 59 have risen in their rankings, 51 dropped and 31 remained stable in their ranks or bands.
- The most improved Indian institution is University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), which moved up 70 places to 148th.
iv.Under the Southern Asian category which includes universities from India and Pakistan, the IITD has secured the top spot among the 308 universities.
v.National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) Islamabad, Pakistan shares the 6th position in the South Asian category with the IITK.
Other Highlights:
i.China leads Asian higher education with the most top-10 universities – four institutions in the top 10, 10 in the top 50, and 22 in the top 100.
ii.Indonesia achieves the highest growth, adding 30 new universities.
iii.Singapore has become Asia’s most concentrated hub of higher education excellence. It produces exceptional research with three universities among the top-10 in Citations per Paper.
iv.Japan’s premier university, The University of Tokyo, remains Asia’s most well-known among international academics and employers.
v.Six South Korean universities are among the region’s top 20, more than any other country/territory.
