On July 26, 2021, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the ‘Sujal -Drink-from-Tap’ project in Puri, the coastal city in Odisha to provide 24×7 piped pure drinking water. Through the launch, Puri has become the 1st city in India to implement such a project.
- Under the project, water fountains have been developed at 400 locations in Puri for the people of Puri to avail high-quality drinking water directly from the tap on a 24-hour basis without any storage or filter.
- The project would benefit 2.5 lakh citizens of Puri and 2 crore tourists who would visit the tourist place every year. This initiative would also reduce plastic usage (water bottles) in the city.
Sujal -Drink-from-Tap:
i.Around 36 million litres per day (MLD) filtered drinking water (estimated quantity) will be provided for the people of Puri after completion of the project i.e. within 9 months.
ii.The drinking water will be sourced from Mangala river in Puri and to ensure purity and quality of the water, an online water quality analyzer at the MangalaGhat water treatment plant (WTP) was installed.
iii.The public health engineering organisation (PHEO) would maintain the piped water system.
iv.The same kind of project to provide 24×7 drinking water is under various stages of implementation in 16 other urban centres of Odisha.
