On January 2, 2020, Delhi AIIMS’ Professor Suresh Chandra Sharma appointed as the 1st ever Chairman of NMC (National Medical Commission). Sharma was the head of ENT(ears, nose, throat) head-surgery department of AIIMS(All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in New Delhi. The Committee also appointed Dr. Rakesh Kumar Vats, Secretary-General, Board Of Governors, Medical Council of India as Secretary of NMC.
The Chairman and the Secretary of NMC will serve for a period of 3 years or till the age of 70 years.About National Commission Bill 2019:
i.On August 8, 2019 National Commission Bill 2019 was introduced which replaces Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.
ii.This Commission was formed to ensure the standard of medical professionals, adoption of latest technologies and periodic assessment of medical institutions.
iii.In this Commission, 33 members will be appointed by the Central Government which includes Chairman, President and Director.
iv.Under this bill there will be common entrance test for both Post-graduate and Under-graduate’s in all medical institutions.
v.The bill also hold National Exit Test for the medical students which obtain the license for practice.
vi.NMC will also provides the guidelines for the determination of fees up to 50 per cent seats in private institutions and deemed universities.
vii.NMC has four autonomous boards,
- Under-graduate medical education board.
- Post-graduate medical education board.
- Medical assessment and rating board.
- Ethics and Medical registration board.
