Prime Minister NarendraModi and Afghanistan President Dr Ashraf Ghani jointly inaugurated the Afghan India Friendship Dam or Salma Dam

About Afghan India Friendship Dam or Salma Dam:
- Multipurpose project
- Capacity: 42 MW
- Purpose: Irrigation of 75000 hectares of land, water supply and other benefits to the people of Afghanistan
- Infrastructure project on river HariRud , in Herat province of Afghanistan
- Executed and implemented by WAPCOS Ltd., a Government of India Undertaking under Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation
About Project:
- The location is spotted 165 km east of Herat Town in Western Afghanistan
- Helicopter service provided to visit the site once in a month due to security reasons
- Indian Engineers and technicians are involved
- All equipment and materials were transported from India to Afghanistan vide Bander-e-Abbas port of Iran via sea
- Cement, Steel reinforcement, Explosives were imported to Afghanistan from Neighbouring Countries
Total Fund Allocated: Rs. 1775 Crore and it will take 10 years to accomplish
The successful completion of the project represents termination of years of hard work by 1,500 Indian and Afghan engineers and other professionals in very difficult conditions.
