India, Seychelles agree to work on naval base project

On June 26,2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Seychelles President Danny Faure agreed to work on the Assumption Island project  in the Indian Ocean as a naval base to expand its footprint.

  • An agreement to develop the island was inked in 2015 between India and Seychelles.
  • This was earlier cancelled by Seychelles due to internal conflicts.

About Assumption Island:

Assumption Island began in 2003, but were formalised in 2015 during Mr. Modi’s visit.

The deal was to include a 20-year access to the base, as well as permission to station some military personnel on ground with facilities on the island funded by India, owned by the Seychelles and jointly managed by both sides.

Other agreements between the two nations:

  • India announced a USD 100-million line of credit to Seychelles, which Faure said would help boost his country’s military infrastructure.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj handed over a second Dornier 228  aircraft to Seychelles as per agreement during PM Modi’s visit in 2015. The aircraft would reach Seychelles before its National Day on June 29.
