On January 4, 2022, the Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Damodardas Modi, visited the states of Manipur and Tripura. He inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 22 Developmental Projects worth over Rs. 4800 crore in Imphal, Manipur. After that, in Agartala, Tripura he inaugurated the New Integrated Terminal Building at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport and will also launch two key development initiatives
Visit in Manipur:
In Manipur, the PM inaugurated 13 Projects worth ~Rs 1850 crores and laid the foundation stone of 9 projects worth ~Rs 2950 crore. These projects related to Road Infrastructure, Drinking Water Supply, Health, Urban Development, Housing, Information Technology, Skill Development, Art and Culture, among others.
- It should be noted that, January 21, 2022, will be observed as the 50th anniversary of Manipur getting statehood.
Following are the key developmental projects:
National Highway (NH) Projects:
i.The PM laid the foundation stone of construction of 5-NH Projects to be built at a cost of more than Rs 1700 crore.
ii.He also inaugurated the Steel Bridge built over the Barak River on NH-37, at a cost of over Rs 75 crore. It will decongest traffic between Silchar and Imphal.
Mobile towers:
A total of 2387 mobile towers were built at a cost of around Rs 1100 crores.
Projects for water supply:
i. Rs 280 crore worth ‘Water Transmission system of Thoubal Multi-purpose project’, which will provide drinking water supply to Imphal.
ii. Rs 65 crore Water Supply Scheme project to provide safe drinking water to residents of ten habitations of Tamenglong district.
iii. Rs 51 crore Augmentation of Senapati District Headquarter Water Supply Scheme to provide a regular water supply to the residents of the area.
Health:
i.Foundation stone laid for the State of the Art Cancer Hospital in Imphal worth around Rs. 160 crore on a PPP (Public Private Partnership) basis at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal.
ii.Inaugurated 200 Bedded Covid Hospital at Kiyamgei with an outlay of about Rs. 37 crore.
- It has been set up in collaboration with DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation).
Imphal Smart City Mission:
Three projects were inaugurated under the Imphal Smart City Mission. These are developed at a cost of more than Rs 170 crore. These are as follows:
i.Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC)
ii.Development of Western Riverfront on Imphal River (Phase I)
iii.Development of Mall Road at Thangal Bazar (Phase I)
Handloom:
To promote the handloom sector and benefit the weaver community, the PM laid the foundation stone of following two projects worth Rs. 36 crore:
i.Mega handloom cluster: It will be built at Nongpok Sekmai in Imphal East district. It will benefit about 17,000 weavers.
ii.Craft and Handloom village: It will be built at Moirang in Bishnupur district. It will help the weaving households, harness the tourism potential of the Moirang and adjoining Loktak Lake and generate employment for the local people.
Others:
i.Foundation stone laid for the Centre for Invention, Innovation, Incubation and Training (CIIIT) to be built at a cost of about Rs 200 crore.
ii.Foundation stone also laid for the construction of the Manipur Institute of Performing Arts at Gurgaon, Haryana with an outlay of more than Rs 240 crore. It will promote the rich art and culture of Manipur.
iii.Foundation stone laid for the construction of Government Residential Quarters at New Checkon to be built at a cost of around Rs 390 crore.
iv.Inauguration of refurbished and renovated Govindajee Temple at Imphal.
iv.Inauguration of the Indian National Army (INA) complex at Moirang that will showcase the significant role played by INA in India’s Independence Movement.
v.Other projects inaugurated by the PM include the new Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Kangpokpi under Enhancing Skill Development Infrastructure (ESDI) and a new office building of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
On the lines of Sabka Saath-Sabka Vikas-Sabka Vishwas, PM laid the foundation stone of 72 Projects worth more than Rs 130 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram. These projects will provide the infrastructural support in health and education sectors for holistic development of the minority communities.
- There is also an ongoing project of Jiribam-Imphal-Tupul railway line, which is being built at a cost of Rs 13,809 crore and will include the world’s tallest pier bridge of 141 metre. The project is scheduled to be completed in March 2022.
Visit to Tripura:
Here, the PM inaugurated the New Integrated Terminal Building of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport and launched 2 key initiatives viz. Mukhyamantri Tripura Gram Samriddhi Yojana and Project Mission 100 of Vidyajyoti Schools.
About New Integrated Terminal Building of MBB Airport:
- It is a state of art building of about Rs 450 crore covering over 30,000 square metres with modern facilities along with latest IT (Information Technology) network integrated system. It is built on the lines of PM’s endeavour to provide modern facilities in all airports across India.
Project Mission 100 of Vidyajyoti Schools:
It is aimed to improve the quality of education by converting 100 existing High/Higher secondary schools to Vidyajyoti Schools with state of art facilities at a cost of around Rs 500 crores in next three years.
- It will cover about 1.2 Lakh students from Nursery to class XII.
Mukhyamantri Tripura Gram Samriddhi Yojana:
It aims to achieve the benchmark standards for service delivery in core development sectors at the village level which include household tap connections, domestic electricity connections, all weather roads, functional toilets for every household, recommended immunization for every child, participation of women in Self Help Groups (SHGs) etc.
