Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi inaugurated Bharat Tex 2024, the world’s biggest textile event held from 26th to 29th February 2024 at the Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, Delhi.
- The event took place in 2 venues, the Bharat Mandapam and YashoBhoomi, two of India’s largest exhibition centres.
- Bharat Tex 2024 inspired by PM Modi’s 5F Vision(Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign) was organised with a unified Farm to Fashion focus.
About Bharat Tex 2024:
Organisers: Bharat Tex 2024 was organised by a consortium of 11 Textile Export Promotion Councils and supported by the Ministry of Textiles.
Participants: policymakers, global CEOs(Chief Executive Officers),3,500 Exhibitors, 3,000 Buyers, and over 100,000 visitors from 111 countries participated in the event.
Highlights:
i.The exhibition, organised across a 2 million sq ft area, featured Vastra Katha, an artistically curated story of textiles.
ii.Uttar Pradesh(UP), Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh(MP), Telangana, Tamil Nadu (TN) and Karnataka, the leading textile states of India participated in the event with dedicated pavilions.
iii.As a part of the event, a Chief Executive Officer(CEO) roundtable on the growth prospects of the Textile Sector was organised under the chairmanship of Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Ministry of Textile.
iv.The event also included a global scale conference with 70 sessions and 112 international speakers saw engaging discussions on key textile issues of the day including Textile Mega Trends, Sustainability, resilient global supply chains and Manufacturing 4.0.
v.Central Silk Board, a statutory body under the Ministry of Textiles organised a special international conference as a part of its Platinum Jubilee (70th year) celebration.
Initiatives and Projects launched at Bharat Tex 2024:
i.The event witnessed the launch of several books, and a documentary launch was based on the theme ‘Women Power in Silk’.
ii.Innovative Business Practices and Economic Models in the Textile Value Chain in India’ (IndiaTex) project, a 4 year United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) project was also launched during the event.
- The project aims to promote the transition of the Indian textile sector towards circularity.
iii.The Ministry of Textile also launched the Textiles Grand Innovation Challenge along with Startup India, DPIIT(Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) to leverage the pool of untapped innovation opportunities.
iv.The event also witnessed the felicitation of the winners of the hackathon on “Fostering Innovation in Technical Textiles”.
v.The event also showcased sustainable initiatives, such as Kasturi Cotton(a new standard in cotton), waterless dyeing, regenerative farming, and the use of organic and recycled raw materials to minimise environmental impact.
Textiles Committee, GeM & SCOPE signed MoU to promote upcycled Products Made From Scrap
Textiles Committee, under the Ministry of Textiles, Government e-Marketplace (GeM), Ministry of Commerce and Industry(MoCI), and Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE), Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Finance, have signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote the upcycled products made from textiles waste and scrap.
Signatories: The MoU was signed by S. P. Verma, Secretary, Textiles Committee, Ajit B. Chavan, Additional CEO, GeM, and SubhRatna, General Manager, SCOPE during the Bharat Tex 2024.
Key Points:
i.Under this MoU, GeM will support the stakeholders in the upcycling ecosystem to provide them with direct market linkages in public procurement, through #Vocalforlocal GeM Outlet Stores.
ii.These stores will also promote upcycled products made from textile waste and scrap.
Note: The GeM portal, launched in 2016, has over 1.46 lakh Government buyers and 21 lakh+ sellers and service providers. They have listed products in 11,980 product categories and 320+ service categories. This year alone, 52.58 lakh orders worth Rs 3.52 Lakh Crore in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) have been fulfilled.
MoU between IIM Jammu and NIFT Srinagar to boost entrepreneurship in J&K
Indian Institute of Management(IIM), Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) signed a MoU with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT ) Srinagar, J&K to foster entrepreneurship and innovation in the J&K.
Signatories: The MoU was signed by Professor B.S. Sahay, Director of IIM Jammu, and Dr. Javid Wani, Director of NIFT Srinagar at Bharat Tex 2024.
Key Points:
i.The MoU between IIM Jammu and NIFT Srinagar envisioned a collaboration framework to converge in areas like academics, research, executive education, training, and the promotion of entrepreneurship and incubation facilities.
ii.This will bridge the gap between the human resource and textile industry and promote interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.
Note: The IIM Jammu, established in 2016, is an Institute of National Importance (INI), and NIFT Srinagar is a premier institute of fashion education in India.
