On 9th June 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, Delhi. Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 is a 2-day event held on 9th & 10th June 2022, organised by the Department of Biotechnology and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
- The expo is a part of the celebration of the completion of 10 years of the establishment of BIRAC. The celebration recognises the efforts of BIRAC toward the biotech sector of India.
The theme of Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 is “Biotech Startup Innovations: Towards AatmaNirbhar Bharat”.
The future trajectory of the Bio-economy in the Biotech sector is to achieve USD 150 billion by 2025 and India as a $100 Bn Bio-manufacturing Hub.
About the Biotech Startup Expo – 2022:
i.The Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 will showcase 75 successful startups supported by the BIRAC, 75 Specialized Biotech Incubation Centres supported by BIRAC, 21 Indian Institutes of Technology(IITs) or universities, 50 Successful Startups supported by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Infrastructure created by BIRAC, helpdesks and various national and international programs of BIRAC.
ii.The expo hosted around 300 stalls showcasing biotechnology applications in various disciplines like pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical industry, agriculture and industrial biotechnology and waste to value and renewable energy sources.
Highlights of the event:
PM Modi also launched the e-portal of 750 biotech products along with the biotech products developed during the 75th year of Independence of India and a coffee book of 75 women biotech entrepreneurs.
Key Points:
i.Prime Minister Modi highlighted that more than 70000 startups have been established in India in the past 8 years.
ii.He also stated that the bio-economy of India has increased 8 times, it has grown from USD 10 billion to USD 80 billion. India is set to become of the top 10 biotech countries in the world.
iii.DBT, BIRAC and all the stakeholders ensured that India is among the top 12 biotechnology destinations in the world and 3rd in the Asia Pacific.
iv.With Global Innovation Index improving to 46th rank, India’s bio-economy is growing in double digits Year on Year, from USD 51 Billion in 2018 to USD 81 Billion in 2021.
