Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi inaugurated several development projects worth Rs 10,000 crore including the Fertiliser Plant, AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), and a new building of the regional centre of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
- The foundation stone for AIIMS and fertilizer plant was laid 5 years ago i.e. in 2016.
- The fertiliser plant will enhance farmers’ income by supplying them with ample urea fertiliser. The plant will serve the needs of the farmers in Purvanchal, UP.
- The regional centre of ICMR would support eradicating Japanese Encephalitis from the Purvanchal.
Key Initiatives:
Gorakhpur Fertilizer Plant:
i.The misuse of urea was stopped by the government of India (GoI) by introducing a 100% neem coating of urea. Soil health cards are given to crores of farmers to identify the fertilizer that is needed for their farm.
ii.The PM stated about the completion of 5 fertilizer plants in different parts of India which will lead to the availability of 60 lakh tonnes of urea.
Note – Recently, the UP government increased the remunerative price for sugarcane farmers up to Rs 300.
iii.The project has been set up under the aegis of Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL), which is a Joint Venture Company of National Thermal Power Corporation, Coal India Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Fertilizer Corporation of India & Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Limited.
iv.The work for the Gorakhpur Plant has been executed by M/s Toyo Engineering Corporation, Japan & Toyo Engineering India Private Limited Consortium with Technology / licensors as KBR, USA (For Ammonia) and Toyo, Japan (For Urea).
v.This project has the world’s highest Prilling Tower of 149.2 Meter. It also consists of India’s first air operated Rubber Dam and Blast Proof Control Room to enhance safety aspects.
Launch of AIIMS- Gorakhpur
i.Increased number of AIIMS: After independence, there was only one AIIMS in India after which, former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had approved 6 more AIIMS.
ii.Currently work is going on across India to build 16 new AIIMS in the last 7 years. The GoI also aims to have at least one medical college in every district of the country.
iii.AIIMS Gorakhpur has been established under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna
