In August 2021, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi virtually dedicated the renovated complex of Jallianwala Bagh Smarak at Amritsar in Punjab to the nation.
- PM also inaugurated the Museum Galleries at the Smarak. 4 Museum galleries have been created through adaptive reuse of redundant and underutilised buildings.
- India decided to observe 14th August every year as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’.
- 13th April 2021 marked the 102nd anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.
Key Points:
i.Several development initiatives have been undertaken in the restoration works of the Jallianwala Bagh complex, which were carried out in sync with the local architectural style of Punjab.
ii.Under restoration, newer areas have been developed for housing the Salvation Ground, Amar Jyot and Flag Mast.
iii.The galleries showcase the historical value of events that unfolded in Punjab during that period, with the fusion of audio-visual technology, 3D representation, and sculptural installations.

Khattar, Uttarakhand – Pushkar Singh Dhami, Himachal Pradesh – Jai Ram Thakur, Punjab – Amarinder Singh and members of Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust also participated in the event.
About Jallianwala Bagh massacre Incident:
i.Jallianwala Bagh Massacre/Massacre of Amritsar was a 10 minute incident held on April 13, 1919, in which British troops under the command of General Reginald Edward Dyer fired on a large crowd of unarmed Indians in an open space known as the Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, Punjab.
ii.The Jallianwala Bagh Memorial was established in 1951 by the Government of India to commemorate the Amritsar massacre. It is managed by the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust.
