PM participates in ‘India’s Techade Chips for Viksit Bharat’ program

PM participates in ‘India’s Techade Chips for Viksit Bharat’ programOn 13th March 2024, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi virtually addressed ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ and laid the foundation stone for setting up 3 semiconductor projects worth about Rs 1.25 lakh crore.

The 3 projects are,

  • Semiconductor fabrication facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), Dholera, Gujarat;
  • Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat; and
  • OSAT facility in Morigaon, Assam.

Key People: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Minister of State (MoS) Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(MeitY); Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister (CM) of Assam; Bhupendra Patel, CM of Gujarat; Vellayan Subbiah, Chairman of CG Power & Industrial Solutions Ltd.; and Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons were present on the occasion among others.

Key Investments and Initiatives:

Dholera Semiconductor Fabrication Facility:

i.The facility will be set up by Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) under the Modified Scheme for setting up Semiconductor Fabs in India.

ii.Total investment: Over Rs 91,000 crore.

iii.This will be the 1st Artificial Intelligence (AI)- enabled commercial semiconductor fab in India.

iv.Technology partner: Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC).

Morigaon OSAT Facility:

i.Set up by TEPL Under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP).

ii.Total investment: About Rs 27,000 crore.

iii.It will have a capacity of 48 million per day.

Sanand OSAT Facility:

i.Set up by CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor ATMP.

ii.Total investment: About Rs. 7,500 crore.

Technical partners: Renesas Electronics Corporation from Japan and Stars Microelectronics from Thailand.

  • This facility will have a capacity of 15 million per day.

India Semiconductor Mission:

Initiated by the GoI, the India Semiconductor Mission aims to foster an end-to-end semiconductor ecosystem, positioning India as a significant player in the global semiconductor industry.
