Parakram Diwas - January 23 2024Parakram Diwas, is annually observed across India on 23 January to commemorate the birth anniversary of one of the prominent independence fighters of India, Subhash Chandra Bose, popularly called Netaji.

  • 23 January 2024 marks the 127th birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose.

Background:

i.In 2021, the Government of India (GoI) decided to commemorate 23 January, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as Parakram Diwas to honour the contributions of Subhash Chandra Bose to the Indian independence movement.

ii.The 1st ever Parakram Diwas was celebrated on 23 January 2021 on the 124th birth anniversary of Netaji.

  • The inaugural event took place at Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata, West Bengal.

About Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose:

i.He was born on 23rd January 1897 in the Oriya Bazar in Cuttack, Orissa Division of Bengal Presidency (Now in Odisha).

ii.In 1921, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) and actively participated in the Indian Independence movement.

iii.In 1924, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (now Kolkata Municipal Corporation).

iv.He became the President of the INC twice, first in 1938, and again in 1939.

v.In 1939, he formed the Forward Bloc, an organization aimed at unifying all the anti-British forces in India.

vi.In 1942, the Indian National Army (INA) (also known as the Azad Hind Fauj) was formed in Southeast Asia to secure Indian independence with Japanese assistance.

vii.INA was initially led by Mohan Singh for a very brief period, Subhas Chandra Bose became the Commander-in-Chief in June 1943.

viii.On October 21, 1943, Subhas Chandra Bose founded the Provisional Government of Free India. It was recognised by 9 world powers including Germany, Italy, Japan, and Myanmar.

ix.He passed away in August 1945 in a plane crash in Taiwan.

2024 Events:

Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi participated in the Parakram Diwas 2024 event on 23 January 2024 at Red Fort in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • The event was organised by the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with institutions like the Archaeological Survey of India, the National School of Drama (NSD), Sahitya Akademi, and the National Archives of India.

Highlights:

During the event, PM Modi launched Bharat Parv, a 9-day event which will be held from 23rd to 31st January 2024, to showcase India’s rich diversity with Republic Day Tableaux and exhibit different cultures.

  • It features efforts of 26 Ministries and Departments, highlighting citizen-centric initiatives, vocalising local, diverse tourist attractions among others.

Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2024:

2024 Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar under Institutional category was awarded to 60 Parachute Field Hospital, Uttar Pradesh recognising its excellent work in Disaster Management.

About the award:

i.The GoI institute Subhas Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar, an annual award to honour the excellent work done by individuals and Institutions in India in the field of Disaster Management such as Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, etc.

ii.The award will be announced every year on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary, and it includes:

  • a cash prize of Rs. 51 lakhs and a certificate (for the institution); and
  • a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh and a certificate (for an individual).
