On 25th January, 2024, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the Padma Awards for 2024. Emmanuel Macron, President of France was the chief guest on 75th Republic Day of India.
Padma Awards2024:
i.Droupadi Murmu, the President of India has approved the conferment of 132 Padma Awards for 2024.
ii.The official list released comprises 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri awards, which include 2 duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one).
iii.Among the awardees, there are 30 women and the list also comprises 8 persons from the category of Foreigners/ NRI/ PIO/OCI and 9 Posthumous awardees.
6 Foreign Nationals Honoured with Padma Awards:
A total of six foreigners were included in the list of winners of the Padma Awards for the year 2024.
i.Among 6 foreign nationals, 4 people from France have been selected for Padma Awards (which is the highest for any foreign country).
- Name of these French people are: Charlotte Chopin(100 year old yoga exponent), Kiran Vyas(international yoga and ayurveda practioner), Pierre Sylvain Filliozat( a Sanskrit scholar) and Fred Negrit (an Indologist).
ii.Young Liu who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of tech giant Hon Hai Technology Group also known as Foxconn based in Taiwan. Foxconn is the world’s largest electronic manufacturing company.
- Young Liu has become 1st foreign national to receive India’s 3rd highest civilian honor, Padma Bhushan so far.
iii.Sasindran Muthuvel from Papua New Guinea was awarded Padma Shri in Public Affairs.
About Padma Awards:
i.Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards in India after”Bharat Ratna” and these awards are bestowed by Government of India. Padma Awards are given in different fields including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature, education, sports, civil service etc.
ii.Padma Awards are given in 3 different categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
- Padma Vibhushan: is India’s second- highest civilian honour and is given for exceptional and distinguished services.
- Padma Bhushan: is 3rd highest civilian award is given for distinguished service of high order.
- Padma Shri: is 4th highest civilian award and is given for distinguished service in any field.
Background of Padma Awards:
i.Government of India (GoI) established the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan as two civilian honour in 1954.
ii.Initially, Padma Vibhushan was classified in 3 different categories: Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg and Tisra Varg.
iii.Later, These 3 classes were renamed as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri on January 8, 1955 as per Presidential notification.
Note: These awards have been given annually since their inception, except in 1978, 1979 and 1993-1997.
Conferment of Awards:
i.Padma Awards are announced every year on Republic Day and its official ceremony held in Rashtrapati Bhavan (Delhi) tentatively in the month of March or April.
ii.The recipients receive a medallion made up of bronze but embossing on them is done with different metals and Sanad (Certificate) that is signed by the President.
iii.The total number of awards given in a year should not exceed 120 which excludes awards given posthumously and awards to NRIs, foreigners and OCIs.
iv.The award cannot be added as a prefix or suffix to the recipient’s name and is not equal to a title.
Padma Awards Committee:
i.Padma Awards are given based on recommendations made by the Padma Awards committee constituted by Prime Minister(PM) every year. The nomination process is open to the public and even self- nomination is accepted.
ii.Padma Awards committee is chaired by Cabinet Secretary of India which includes members such as: Home Secretary, Secretary to the President and 4 to 6 eminent people.
- At present, Rajiv Gauba is the cabinet secretary of India.

Eminent Personalities who honoured with the Padma Vibhushan:
i.Former Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu, Telugu Megastar and Politician K. Chiranjeevi, Social worker and founder of Sulabh International Bindeshwar Pathak , Veteran Actor Vyjayantimali Bali and famous Bharat Natyam Dancer Padma Subrahmanyam are the recipients of Padma Vibhushan for this year.
ii.Veteran Politician M. Venkaiah Naidu who came from Chavatapalem, Nellore district(Andhra Pradesh) was elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Udayagiri(Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh) twice in 1978 and 1983.
- He served as union minister for rural development from September 2000 to June 2002 in then Prime Minister (PM) Vajpayee’s cabinet.
- He played important role in PM Modi government and served as minister for urban development and minister of information and broadcasting in 2014.
- He was elected as 13th Vice President of India in 2017 and remained in his office till 2022.
iii.K.Chiranjeevi is a prominent Telugu actor and he was honored with Padma Bhushan in 2006.
iv.Bindeshwar Pathak founder of Sulabh International social service organization (established in 1970) honored with Padma Vibhushan posthumously. Earlier, he was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1991.
v.Veteran actor, bharatnatyam dancer and politician Vyjayanthimala and famous Bharat Natyam dancer Padma Subrahmanyam were the other awardees.

i.Ace Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna(is the oldest sports person in the world to be ranked No.1 in Men’s doubles tennis ranking) is selected for Padma Shri along with 6 other sports persons.
ii.Joshna Chinappa(Squash) have won several medals at Asian Games, two medals at Commonwealth Games and 4 medals at World Championship doubles.
Parbati Baruah among 6 from North-East to win Padma Shri
Government of India has selected 6 persons from North-East to honor them with India’s 4th highest civil award in order to recognize their work and contribution towards society in different fields.
i.Parbati Baruah(Assam) popularly known as “Hath ki Pari”, India’s 1st female elephant mahout; Sangthankima(Mizoram) runs an orphanage “Thutak NunpuituTeam” ; Yanung Jamoh Lego(Arunachal Pradesh).
ii.Sarbeswar Basumatary (Assam) for adopting mixed integrated farming approach; Smriti Rekha Chakma(Tripura) and Machichan Sasa(Manipur) for conserving ancient pottery”Longpi” that traces back to the Neolithic Period are selected for 2024 Padma Shri.
Other Important Persons Honored with The Padma Shri:
i.Chami Murmi known as the Lady Tarzan of Jharkhand has been selected for 2024 Padma Shri for her struggle against timber mafia in Jharkhand.
ii.Sathyanarayana Beleri also known as seeding Sathya from Kasargod, Kerala is selected for the Padma Shri award for his contribution of transforming guardian of paddy crops which results in preserving over 650 traditional rice varieties.
- He introduced “Rajakayame rice”which gave boost to production and conservation in 3 states: Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
