Tata steel chess india 2023 from August 31 to September 9 2023The Tata Steel Chess India Rapid and Blitz 2023 was held from 31st August to 9th September 2023 at the National Library of India, Kolkata,West Bengal.

  • India’s International Master Divya Deshmukh from Maharashtra won the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid title in the women’s category.
  • Indian Chess Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa from TamilNadu secured third place in both Open Rapid and Open Blitz events.
  • This marks the 5th edition of the tournament since the first edition was held in 2018.

Note:

Rapid: a game of chess played within a fixed amount of time, usually between 10 to 60 minutes per player.
Blitz: a game of chess, commonly known as speed chess, where all the moves must be made in a fixed time of less than 10 minutes for each player.

Open Rapid:

i.Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France won the Tata Steel Chess India Open Rapid title.

  • Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan finished second, while Praggnanandhaa, India’s Vidit Gujrathi and Alexander Grischuk shared third place.

Open Blitz:

i. Russian Grandmaster (GM) Alexander Grischuk (played under FIDE flag) won the Tata Steel India 2023 Open Blitz title.

  • India’s Praggnanandhaa secured third in the 2023 Tata Steel India Open Blitz, while Nodirbek Abdusattorov finished in second place.
  • India’s Arjun Erigaisi secured fourth in the blitz match.

Women’s Blitz: 

i.Ju Wenjun of China won the Tata Steel Chess India 2023 Blitz title.

  • She has been the World champion since 2018.

ii.India’s Koneru Humpy finished second, while India’s Dronavalli Harika and Divya Deshmukh finished third and fourth respectively.

Women’s Rapid:

i.The 17-year-old IM Divya Deshmukh won the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid title in the women’s category.

  • Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun finished second while IM Polina Shuvalova finished third.

Prize Money:

Rapid winner – USD 10000

Blitz  winner – USD  7500

Tata Steel Chess India Festival Events:

The Tata Steel Chess India Festival Events also held on the sidelines of the main event.

i.GM Mitrabha Guha won the Tata Steel Chess Festival 2023 All India Blitz Open.

  • GM Diptayan Ghosh and Soham Bhattacharyya were finished second and third respectively.

ii.WIM Arpita Mukherjee won the Tata Steel Chess India 2023 Festival All India Women.

iii.Soham Bhattacharyya won the Tata Steel Chess India 2023 Festival All Bengal Under-19.
