PM visit to Tamil Nadu

India’s first indigenous PFBR at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu

PM Narendra Modi visited Tamil Nadu on 4th March 2024 and inaugurated India’s first indigenous Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) with a capacity of 500 Mwe(Megawatt electric) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu marking a significant step in the country’s nuclear power program

iii. It has a closed fuel cycle and can produce more fuel than it consumes, enabling India to achieve self-reliance in fuel supply for future fast reactors.

  • The reactor core is composed of control, blanket, and fuel subassemblies.

Note: India will focus on utilizing thorium in the third stage of its nuclear power program. Once commissioned, India will be the second country after Russia to have a commercially operating Fast Reactor.

India’s three-stage nuclear power program was formulated by Homi Bhabha, the well-known physicist, in the 1950s to secure the country’s long-term energy independence, through the use of uranium and thorium reserves found in the monazite sands of coastal regions of South India
