Overview of India’s Export Growth of Agriculture, Organic & Tea during FY 2020-21

India’s agriculture exports registers increaseIndia’s export growth performance details of Agriculture and Organics were released by Dr Anup Wadhawan, Secretary, Department of Commerce, Government of India during a meeting.Meanwhile, Indian tea exports are expected to grow at a slower pace in 2020-21 as per the latest detail released by Tea Board of India.

Export Growth of Agriculture :-

India’s export of agriculture and allied products (including marine and plantation products) increased by 17.34% to USD 41.25 Billion during 2020-21 (in INR terms the increase was 22.62%). Exports during 2020-21 amounted to INR 3.05 lakh crore compared to INR 2.49 lakh crore during 2019-20.India’s Agricultural & Allied Imports for 2020-21 stood at USD 20.67 billion compared to USD 20.64 billion in 2019-20.

  • Despite COVID-19, the balance of trade in agriculture has improved by 42.16% from USD 14.51 billion to USD 20.58 billion.
  • India’s export figures were stagnant for the past three years.For the FY2019-20 was USD 35.16 billion.

Agriculture Products

For agriculture products (excluding marine and plantation products), the growth was 28.36% with exports of USD 29.81 billion in 2020-21 compared to USD 23.23 billion in 2019-20.

  • A Huge growth was recorded in export of cereals – Export of non-basmati rice grew by 136.04% to USD 4794.54 million; wheat by 774.17% to USD 549.16 million.
  • For the first time, cereals were exported to many countries. Rice was exported to countries like Timor-Leste, Puerto Rico, Brazil for the 1st time.
  • Largest markets for India’s agriculture products are USA, China, Bangladesh, UAE, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Nepal, Iran and Malaysia.
  • Highest growth was recorded for Indonesia (102.42%), Bangladesh (95.93%) and Nepal (50.49%).

Increase in Export of Spices

During 2020-21, export of spices touched the highest ever level of around USD 4 billion during 2020-21. Export of pepper increased by 28.72% to USD 1269.38 million; Cinnamon by 64.47% to USD 11.25 million.

Organic exports register 50.94% growth

The organic exports during 2020-21 were USD 1040 million compared to USD 689 million in 2019-20, which is a growth of 50.94%(51%).

  • Even in volume terms, exports of organic products grew at 39% compared to 8 lakh 88 thousand 179 tonnes in 2019-20.
  • The key organic products that were shipped out include oil cake and meals, oil seeds, cereals, millets, spices and condiments, tea, medicinal plant products, dry fruits, sugar, pulses and coffee.

India’s Tea Exports fell by 16.30% in 2020-21

India tea exports in 2020-21 fell in respect of both volume and value. Exports dropped to 202 million kg (mkg) from 241.34 in 2019-20, which is a decline of 16.30 percent.

  • The average price of tea per unit in exports has increased by 14.54% in 2020-21 compared to 2019-20. This has led to a reduction in export orders .
  • Factors like lockdown in many countries, disturbances in the exchange market & banking transactions have affected the purchase of tea in many countries.

South Indian teas perform better than North

  • In the South, the unit price increased by 16 percent in 2020-21 which lowered the shipment volume by 12.25 per cent .
  • In the North, unit price increased by 14.72 percent in 2020-21 which lowered the shipment volume by 18.95 per cent .
