Fruits & vegetables in J&K covered under 'Operation Green's TOP to TOTAL' schemeOn September 07, 2020 Government of India extended Price Stabilisation interventions under ‘Operation Greens’ scheme for majority of fruits and vegetables grown in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) to extend support to farmers in J&K.

The initiative is aimed to support farmers of Fruits and Vegetables under Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan in order to prevent distress sales, Price Stabilization interventions under Central Sector Scheme – ‘Operation Greens’.

It has been extended from Tomato, Onion and Potato (TOP) to all notified fruits and vegetables (TOTAL) for a period of six months on a pilot basis.

Key Points:

i.The Fruits and Vegetables notified in J&K are Apple, Almond, Pear, Capsicum, Carrot, Cucumber, Okra, Orange, Kinnow and Lemon. 

Under the scheme, Union Food Processing Industries Ministry will be providing 50 % subsidy for the following:

  • For cost of transportation of notified crops from production clusters to consumption centres
  • For cost of hiring appropriate storage facilities for a period of upto 3 months for notified crops. 
  • If the price of crops falls below the average of the last three years or 15% below last year’s price. 

Operation Green:

i.Operation Green is a price fixation scheme which ensures that farmers get the right price for their produce. It approved by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries with the target to stabilise the supply of tomato, onion and potato crops (TOP crops) in India .

ii.The Scheme was announced in the 2018-19 budget by the Finance Minister of India, Arun Jaitley on the lines of ‘Operation Flood’, with an outlay of Rs 500 crore to promote Farmer Producers Organizations (FPOs ), agri-logistics, processing facilities and professional management.
