Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index: India Falls a Rank in Mobile & Fixed Broadband Speeds

India slips a rank in mobileAccording to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index (September 2022 edition), India dropped a rank in both ‘median mobile network speeds’ and ‘fixed broadband speeds’, despite marginally higher download speeds in September 2022 compared to August 2022.

  • India’s rank in global median mobile download speeds fell from 117 to 118, despite an increase in speed from 13.52 Mbps in August 2022 to 13.87 Mbps in September 2022.
  • India’s rank in global median fixed broadband speeds fell from 78 to 79, despite an increase in broadband speeds from 48.29 Mbps in August 2022 to 48.59 Mbps in September 2022.

Speedtest Global Index by Ookla

The Speedtest Global Index ranks both the mobile and fixed broadband speeds data from around the world on a monthly basis.

  • Furthermore, the data it generates every month is derived from hundreds of millions of tests performed by actual people using Speedtest.

Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, is widely considered as the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data, and analysis.

Performance of India

i.On the Reliance Jio 5G network in Delhi, Ookla reported a median download speed of 600 Mbps, compared to a 200 Mbps median speed for Airtel.

ii.Reliance Jio’s 5G network, which uses C-band spectrum, was found to have faster speeds between 606.53 Mbps and 875.26 Mbps.

  • The speeds in the lower 700 MHz coverage band were typically less than 100 Mbps.

iii.With a 67.4% share of the addressable market for 5G devices, Reliance Jio had the largest share, followed by Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

iv.According to a recent Ookla report, the debut of 5G networks in India will greatly accelerate mobile download speeds, which also claimed that 5G in India is hitting 500 Mbps.

  • It also reported that 89% of Indian smartphone users are ready to upgrade to 5G.

Global Ranking

i.China dominates the Speedtest Global Index, with Shanghai being the fastest city with a median download speed of 158.63 Mbps for mobile networks and Beijing leading with 238.86 Mbps for fixed broadband.

ii.Kosovo made the highest improvement, rising 42 spots overall.

iii.Norway retained the top spot for overall global median mobile speeds.

iv.Madagascar experienced the most improvement in overall global fixed median speeds, rising 14 points to tie Chile for the first position.

v.The global median mobile download speed ranged at 33.17 Mbps while median upload speeds ranged 9.03 Mbps.

  • The global median download speed for fixed broadband ranged at 71.41 Mbps and upload speed at 30.65 Mbps.
