OAG Data: Mumbai-Delhi Becomes World’s Eighth Busiest Domestic Flight Route in 2024

In December 2024, the United Kingdom (UK) based global travel data provider Official Airline Guide (OAG) released a report titled “Busiest Flight Routes in the World 2024”. According to the report, the Mumbai(BoM)-Delhi route in India ranked the 8th busiest domestic route in the world in 2024, with airlines operating 7.963 million seats. In 2023, it was in 9th place with 7.276 million seats.

  • The Busiest International Airline Route in 2024 is Hong Kong(HKG) to Taipei (TPE) with 6.8 million seats.
  • Cairo(CAI) to Jeddah(JED) with 5.5 million seats and Seoul Incheon(ICN) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) 5.4 million seats secured 2nd and 3rd position, respectively in the Busiest International Airline Route in 2024.

Key Highlights:

i.The majority of routes in the Top 10 Busiest International Routes for 2024 are in Asia, seven routes in total(three routes from Japan, two from China, and one each from India, South Korea, Vietnam, Australia, and Saudi Arabia).

  • From other regions, one route is from Africa (Cairo to Jeddah), one from Europe and North America (New York JFK to London Heathrow) and two operate within the Middle East (Cairo to Jeddah and Dubai to Riyadh).

ii.The Jeju-Seoul Gimpo route in South Korea, with 14.18 million seats, remained the busiest domestic flight route in the Asia Pacific and globally.

  • In the Asia Pacific region, the Mumbai-Delhi route was ranked the 6th busiest.

iii.The Jeddah to Riyadh route in Saudi Arabia has seen the highest growth in the Top 10, with a 10% increase in capacity in 2024 compared to 2023.

iv.This report is based on its Global Airline Schedules data.The report projected that international passenger traffic is likely to reach 4.1 billion by the end of 2024.
