According to a report released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Andhra Pradesh (AP) emerged as the top performer in agriculture & allied Gross Value Output (GVO).
- The report focuses on the value of output from agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors.
With a total GVO of Rs. 2,03,638.5 crore in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors over the nine years to 2019–20, Andhra Pradesh has witnessed 92.4% growth.
- It is the highest among all states, with Kerala being the only state to have recorded negative growth of more than 10%.
The Top Performers
i.Andhra Pradesh (AP) experienced the highest growth in agricultural and allied GVO, while its growth in crops (agriculture and commercial) was 48.1% at Rs. 80,710.41 crore in 2019-20, compared to Rs. 54,555.89 crore in 2011-12.
- In terms of fishing & aquaculture, AP recorded a significant rise of over 300% from Rs. 14,208.37 crore in 2011–12 to Rs. 58,689.24 crore in 2019–20.
ii.Madhya Pradesh was the top state in terms of recording the highest 56.7% growth, with only crops (agricultural and commercial both) totaling Rs. 1,31,781.42 crore in 2019–20 as compared to Rs. 84,077.42 crore in 2011–12.
iii.The GVO in agricultural and related activities was recorded at Rs. 3,05,615.24 crore in 2019–20 in Uttar Pradesh, a major producer of paddy, wheat, and sugarcane, up 24.8% from Rs. 2,44,884.44 crore in 2011–12.
Top 5 states – Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Tamilnadu are the top five states with higher GVO.
Positive contributions from 10 states
i.GVO growth exceeded national growth in 10 states, including Tripura and Mizoram, as well as two union territories — Lakshadweep and Daman & Diu.
ii.In India, the total GVO in the agriculture & allied sectors climbed by 30.6% from Rs. 19,08,087.53 crore in 2011–12 to Rs. 24,92,052.67 crore in 2019–20.
iii.In Madhya Pradesh, the value of paddy has more than doubled, while in Telangana and Odisha, it has increased by more than 40%.
iv.Despite considerable growth in paddy, owing mostly to official procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), Odisha’s overall crop value increased by only 9.0% in nine years.
Decline in Growth Â
i.Kerala, Delhi, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli were the only regions where output value fell over the nine-year review period.
ii.Kerala’s GVO has decreased almost every year, from Rs. 55,584.37 crore in 2011-12 to Rs. 49,785.83 crore in 2019-20.
