In November 2025, the President of Janata Dal (United) JD(U) party, Nitish Kumar officially sworn-in as the Chief Minister (CM) of Bihar for a record 10th time, after his party and its alliance partners under BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the 2025 Bihar state assembly elections.
- Later, he was unanimously elected as leader of both the JD(U) legislature party and NDA legislature party.
- With this, Kumar continues to be one of the longest-serving CMs in India as he has been in power for nearly 2 decades, except a brief 9-month gap in 2014-15.

2025 Bihar Assembly Elections:
Alliance Partners: JD(U) contested the 2025 Bihar assembly elections( which was held in two phases in November 2025) in alliance with BJP, Lok JanShakti Party (LJP), Hindustani Awami Morcha (HAM) (Secular), and Rashtritya Lok Morcha (RLM) under NDA.
Election Results: BJP-led NDA won 202 seats in the 243-member assembly against Mahagathbandhan (MGB) which managed to secure only 35 seats.
Other Significance: BJP’s Candidate Maithili Thakur, singer-turned-politician, becomes Bihar’s youngest MLA at 25 and she represented Alinagar constituency.
About Nitish Kumar:
Served as MP: For the 1st time, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) to Lok Sabha (the Lower House of Parliament) from Barh constituency in 1989, where he represented till 2004.
Union Cabinet Portfolios: Before serving as Bihar’s CM, Kumar held various union ministries like: Ministry of Railway (MoR) (from 2001 to 2004), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) (from March 19, 1998 to August 05, 1999, and from May 27, 2000 to July 21, 2001).
- He also served as Union Minister of Surface Transport for a brief time period i.e. from November 22, 1999 to March 03, 2000.
