On October 20, 2020 Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs(Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) virtually laid the foundation stone for India’s first Multi-modal Logistic Park(MMLP) at Jogighopa in Assam. Rs 693.97 crore park will provide direct air, road, rail and waterways connectivity to the people.
i.The park will be developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana of the Government of India.
ii.It is being created by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL), owned by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways(MoRTH).
MoU between NHIDCL and Ashoka Paper Mills
On the occasion for sharing land and logistics in Jogighopa, a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) was signed between NHIDCL and Ashoka paper mills, Government of Assam.
About the 1st MMLP:
i.It is being developed in 317-acre land along the Brahmaputra.
ii.The 1st phase of construction is scheduled to be completed by 2023.
iii.Already, Rs 280 crore worth work have been awarded including Rs 171 crore for road construction, Rs 87 crore for erecting the structure, and Rs 23 crore for rail lines. iv.Construction work will start in November 2020.
v.The project is expected to create direct or indirect employment to about 20 lakh youth in the State.
Forthcoming Roads and Rail Line constructions:
A 4-lane road will be constructed to cover the distance of 154 km between Jogighopa and Guwahati.
A 3-km rail line will be constructed to connect Jogighopa station to the MMLP.
Another 3-Km rail will be constructed to connect MMLP to IWT(Inland Water Terminal).
For easier connectivity, the road to newly developed Rupsi airport will be upgraded to 4-lanes.

i.Nitin Gadkari stated that MoRTH envisages to develop 35 MMLPs in India, of which the Detailed Project Report(DPR) and feasibility report preparation is ongoing.
ii.MMLP will have all the facilities like, warehouse, railway siding, cold storage, custom clearance house, etc.,
Statements made by Nitin Gadkari in Regard to National Highway
- MoRTH has plans for National Highway(NH) works worth Rs 80,000 crore in Assam.
- Within this financial year, NH works for 575 km worth Rs. 3,545 crore will be completed.
- By next year, NH works of about Rs 15,000 crore will be awarded, while DPRs for works of Rs 21,000 crore will be completed for the State.
- A 203 km NH length of Rs 610 crore has been approved for 2020-21, under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme.
- On the NH in Assam, a total of 12 accident black spots have been identified. Of them, 3 have been temporarily improved. By 2023, all the black spots will be eradicated.
