Nihal Sarin, a 14-year-old Indian Chess Grandmaster has secured a win at the 2019 Asian Continental Chess Championship in Xingtai, China in the blitz event.
Key points:
i. He scored eight points from nine rounds of the event which meant that he ended the tournament with a lead of a full point.
ii. Sarin has recently crossed the 2600 Elo points to become the third youngest player to achieve it.
iii. Vietnam GM Le Quang Liem secured the second spot and Indian Srinath Narayanan was placed third.
iv. India’s Karthikeyan Murali (6.5 points) Liem (7 points), SP Sethuraman (6.5 points), Srinath Narayanan (6.5 pts, 4th) and Abhijeet Gupta (6 points) qualified for the world cup, which will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
v. Dinara Saduakassova of Kazaksthan got the top prize with 7.5 points.
vi. Sarin, though, was not able to qualify for the world cup as he finished 11th after a tie-break in the open event
vii. WGM R Vaishali had the best result among the Indians securing fifth place with her six points from nine rounds.
