History: The modern structured postal system in India was introduced by Lord Dalhousie in 1854.
- The India Post Office Act of 1854 provided the legal foundation for the postal system, later expanded and modernized after independence.
Global Connection: The observance coincides with World Post Day, celebrated worldwide on October 9 every year, commemorating the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
Observance of NPW 2025:
NPW 2025 is being observed from October 6 to 10, 2025, with each day dedicated to a specific theme highlighting various services and initiatives of India Post.
October 6 – Technology Day: Workshops and awareness programs were organized to promote India Post’s digital transformation through training on digital tools, postal technology, and e-commerce-enabled services.
October 7 – Financial Inclusion Day: Camps and special sessions were organized to promote India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) and Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) services.
October 8 – Philately & Citizen-Centric Services Day: Philately exhibitions, competitions, and seminars, along with interactive sessions on letter writing, were organized to promote stamp collecting and preserve the art of letters.
October 9 – World Post Day: India Post is celebrating World Post Day 2025 under the theme #POST FOR PEOPLE LOCAL SERVICE. GLOBAL REACH’.
October 10 – Customer Day: The day emphasizes India Post’s commitment to accessibility, reliability, and enhanced customer engagement.

Throughout NPW 2025, India Post is organizing various programs to enhance public awareness and engagement:
Dhai Akhar Letter Writing Competition: Encouraging traditional letter writing among the youth.
Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign: Promoting cleanliness and hygiene within postal facilities.
Hindi Pakhwada: Celebrating the use of Hindi language in postal services.
Digital Transformation Initiatives: Rollout of Information Technology(IT 2.0) applications(app) to modernize postal operations.
