National Organ Donation Day

The National(Indian) Organ Donation Day is annually observed across India on 27th November to create awareness about the importance of organ donation and to recognise the contributions made by the organ donors.

The day also aims to encourage organ donation among the citizens.

  • 27th November 2021 marks the observance of the 12th National Organ Donation Day. 
  • National Organ Donation Day has been celebrated since 2010.

The day is annually organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), a National level organization set up under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Events:

On the occasion of the 12th Indian Organ Donation Day, the NOTTO organised an event at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, Janpath, New Delhi. Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare participated in the event.

  • At the event, Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has felicitated the members of families of deceased donors who gave their consent in a time of grief.

Key Points:

i.He also stated that the total number of organ transplants done per year in India has increased from 4990 in 2013 to ~12625 in 2019.

ii.He also stated that according to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT), India now ranks 3rd in the world only behind the United States(US) and China.

Awards:

i.State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) of Maharashtra won the award for the highest number of deceased donor transplants.

ii.Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) for the Western Region won the award for best performance.

iii.Velammal Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Madurai, Tamil Nadu has won the best transplant hospital award. 

What is organ donation?

Organ donation is the process of surgically removing an organ or tissue from one person (the organ donor) and placing it into another person

The organs and tissues which can be transplanted include the Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Heart,

Lung, Intestine, Corneas, Middle ear, Skin, Bone, Bone marrow, Heart valves, Connective tissue, and Vascularized composite allografts.

COVID-19 vs Organ Donation:

Globally there has been a decline in organ donation due to the Covid 19 Pandemic.

According to the Lancet journal, the countries with higher infection rates has experienced more than 50% decline in organ donation.
