National Energy Conservation Day 2025– December 14

National Energy Conservation Day (NECD) is annually observed across India on 14th December to promote energy saving and encourage adoption of efficient, sustainable energy practices.

Background:

Introduction of NECD: In 1991, NECD was declared, and the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) were launched to recognise industries and establishments that reduced energy consumption while sustaining efficiency and productivity.

  • The NECA awards were conferred for the first time on 14 December 1991.

First NECD Observation: The inaugural NECD was also observed on 14 December 1991.

Formation of BEE: The BEE was established as a statutory body on 1 March 2002 at the central level to support and facilitate implementation of the Energy Conservation Act (EC Act).

National Energy Conservation Week: BEE will observe National Energy Conservation Week from 14 to 20 December 2025 across India.

2025 Events:

Chief Guest: On 14 December 2025, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, attended the NECD 2025 celebrations at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi (Delhi) as the Chief Guest and felicitated the winners of the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2025 and the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2025.

National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2025: The 35th NECA award structure includes 28 subsectors across 7 broad categories( industries, transport, buildings, institutions, energy-efficient appliances, Innovation Awards for Professional, and Energy Conservation Professionals & Influencers), with a new category for Social Media Influencers and Digital Content Creators introduced to acknowledge their role in promoting energy conservation awareness.

  • This year, the awards comprised 25 First Prizes, 5 Second Prizes, 26 Certificates of Merit (CoM), and 3 Certificates of Recognition (CoR) under the Innovation Awards category.
  • Top State Performers: Andhra Pradesh(AP) won the First Prize (Group II) for the fourth consecutive year for its sustained energy conservation efforts. Chandigarh secured first position (Group-5) for exemplary energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Best Performing Unit: East Vinod Nagar Metro Station (Delhi Metro Pink Line) was recognised as the Best Performing Unit for outstanding energy savings and sustainability practices.
  • Established in 1991, the NECA honored organisations for excellence in energy efficiency and conservation.

National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2025: Organised by the MoP since 2005 to promote energy conservation awareness among students.

  • The 2025 edition was conducted in three stages: school, state and national levels, and was divided into two groups: Group ‘A’ for students of Classes V–VII and Group ‘B’ for students of Classes VIII–X.
  • At the State level, prizes ranged from Rs 50,000 (First Prize) to Rs 7,500 (Appreciation Prize), while at the National level, awards ranged from Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 15,000. Winners also received laptops or tablets and an opportunity for a study tour within India.
