In order to raise awareness about endangered species and wildlife in India, National Endangered Species Day is celebrated every year on the 3rd Friday of May. This year the day falls on May 15, 2020 & we are celebrating the 15th edition.
Key Points:
i.Since the lockdown imposed due to coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, organisations like Endangered Species Coalition have decided to observe the day virtually by organizing various online activities.
ii.For the first time in the 1960s & in 1970s, concern was expressed for the protection and well-being of the environment and the wildlife present in the environment. Subsequently, Endangered Species Act of 1973 was enacted in the US to protect endangered species. It is said that in 2006, the US Senate passed an act and stressed the observance of Endangered Species Day. After this, the day started being celebrated.
iii.As per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), at least 40 % species of animals, plants, and insects are at the risk of extinction around the globe.
About Endangered species:
These species are at risk of extinction due to sudden rapid decrease in their population or loss of their critical habitat. The plants or animals which face a threat of extinction can be categorised as endangered species.
