The National Doctors Day is annually observed across India on 1st July to recognise the noble profession “doctors” and to highlight their contribution to the society.
- The day also marks the both birth and death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy(BC Roy), a physician who also served as the 2nd Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal(WB).
The national observance of the Doctors Day across India is led by the Indian Medical Association(IMA).
The theme of National Doctors’ Day 2022 is “Family Doctors on the Front Line”.
- Note: This was also the theme of World Family Doctor Day (FDD) 2020 (19th May). the theme of FDD 2022 is “Family Doctors, Always There to Care!”.
Background:
The Indian Medical Association(IMA) initiated the celebration of the National Doctors Day, for the first time, on 1st July 1991.
- The day commemorates the spirit of doctors across the globe who work day and night consistently to ensure well-being of patients.
About Bidhan Chandra Roy(BC Roy):
i.Bidhan Chandra Roy(BC Roy) was born on 1st July 1882 in Patna, Bihar.
ii.After completing his studies from St Bartholomew’s Hosptial, he became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), as well as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS).
iii.He was instrumental in establishing the Indian Medical Association in 1928 and the Medical Council of India in 1934.
iv.He was the first elected President of the Medical Council of India. He was Mahatma Gandhi’s personal physician and the first medical consultant in the subcontinent of India.
v.He later joined politics and served as the 2nd CM of West Bengal from 1948 to 1962. He was the 1st CM of WB after India gained Independence.
vi.The government of India honoured him with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1961, for his contribution to the India’s development.
Events:
On the occasion of the National Doctors Day 2022, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare(MoHFW), addressed the doctors community at tn event orgnised at Lady Hardinge Medical College(LHMC), New Delhi, Delhi.
Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State, MoHFW also participated in the event.
Highlights:
- During the event, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission(IPC), Autonomous Institution of MoHFW, released the 9th Edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP 2022) with a view to strengthen the standards of drugs in India.
