On August 15 2025, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) or Drugs-Free India Campaign, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJE) has successfully completed 5 years.

  • The Department of Social Justice & Empowerment (DoSJE) under MoSJE in partnership with the Government of National Capital Territory (NCT) Delhi has organised a special event on August 13, 2025 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of NMBA in KV School No.2 in New Delhi, Delhi.
  • MoSJE acts as the Nodal Ministry for drug demand reduction in India and is responsible for coordinating and monitoring all aspects of drug abuse prevention, assessment of the extent of the problem, preventive action, among others.

About Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA):

Launched: NMBA was officially launched on August 15, 2020 by the MoSJE under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR).

Coverage: It was initially launched in 272 districts across 32 States/Union Territories (UTs) which were identified as most vulnerable in terms of usage of drugs. The initiative has now been extended to all districts of the country.

3-Pronged Strategy: NMBA is based on 3-pronged approach comprises:

  • Supply control which is managed by Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB);
  • Demand Reduction & Awareness is led by MoSJE through extensive outreach and awareness activities;
  • Treatment & Rehabilitation facilities are provided by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW).

Implementation: NMBA initiative is being implemented at 4-levels i.e. at central level by MoSJE;

  • State-level by state level Abhiyaan committee, chaired by Principal or Chief Secretary(CS) of the department responsible for its implementation;
  • District-level by district level Abhiyaan committee, chaired by District Collector or Magistrate;
  • Municipalities-level by municipal or below district level Abhiyaan committees.

Key Accomplishments of NMBA:

Impact: So far, through the various activities initiated under NMBA, over 18.10 crore people have been sensitized on substance use including more than 6.02 crore youth and over 4.08 crore women.

Master Volunteers (MVs): More than 20,000 MVs have been identified and trained under NMBA.

Nationwide Commitment: More than 1.67 crore students from 99,595 educational institutions have pledged to be drug free under a national online pledge.

Web Portal: In 2021, the MoSJE launched a NMBA website (https://nmba.dosje.gov.in/) provides detailed information to the users about the Abhiyaan, an online discussion forum, NMBA dashboard, e-pledge.

Helpline Number: The MoSJE maintains a toll-free helpline number 14446 for de-addiction. It aims to provide primary counselling and immediate referral services to the person seeking help from drug abuse.

Key MoUs: MoSJE has signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with spiritual or social service organizations like: The Art of Living, Brahma Kumaris, Sant Nirankari Mission, Ram Chandra Mission (Daaji), ISKCON and All World Gayatri Parivaar, to support NMBA and conduct mass awareness activities.

Nationwide Campaigns: The NMBA regularly organizes nationwide programs such as ‘Nashe se Azaadi’, ‘Naya Bharat’, ‘NMBA Interaction with NCC’, to engage and connect with youth and other stakeholders.

Geo-tagged de-addiction facilities: All the de-addiction facilities across the country have been geo-tagged which enables easy access.
