Nadal Clinches 22nd Grand Slam Title in ROLAND-GARROS 2022

Rafael Nadal Parera ‘Rafa’, the legendary Spanish professional tennis player clinched his 22nd Grand Slam title (Men’s singles category) in ROLAND-GARROS (French Open) 2022, held at Court Philippe-Chatrier, Paris, France. The tournament took place from 16 May to 5 June 2022. Nadal defeated Casper Ruud (Norway) in the final of French open 2022 and added his 14th ROLAND-GARROS 2022 trophy to his cabinet with the prize money of 2.2 million euros.

  • The French Open 2022 was played on clay courts. Rafael Nadal is known as “The King of Clay (for 14 titles in French Open)”.
  • It was the 126th edition of the French Open and the second Grand Slam event of 2022.
  • La Coupe des Mousquetaires is the trophy awarded to the winner of the Men’s Singles competition at the French Open.

With this title, Nadal, at the age of 36, became the oldest French Open men’s singles champion going past Andres Gimeno’s record of 34 years and 305 days from 1972.

Achievements of Rafael Nadal:

i.Rafael Nadal becomes the first player in history to win 22 Grand Slam titles in Men’s Singles. He won his first French Open title in 2005.

  • Followed by him are Roger Federer (Switzerland) won 20 Grand Slams and Novak Djokovic (Serbia) won 20 Grand Slams respectively.
  • Nadal defeated Djokovic to enter the Semi-final of French open 2022.

ii.Rafael Nadal reached the latest milestone in his legendary career by earning his 300th Grand Slam match victory by defeating Corentin Moutet of France.

iii.Returning from the injury Nadal won his 21st Grand Slam in Australian Open 2022.

iv.Nadal Ranks 4 in Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Rankings and his opponent Casper Ruud Ranks 6 in ATP Rankings.

  • N. Djokovic Ranks 1, Daniil Medvedev (Russia) Ranks 2 and Alexander Zverev (Germany) Ranks 3  in ATP Rankings accordingly.

The Indian Record in French Soil:

India’s Rohan Bopanna has entered his name in the history books. The veteran tennis player and his Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop have entered the semi-finals stage (Men’s Doubles category) of the French Open for the first time. The duo defeated British-Finnish pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Henri Heliovaara in the quarter-finals of the French Open 2022.

  • The Duo later lost to Jean Julien Rojer and Marcelo Arevalo in the semi-finals of the men’s doubles category.

Winner of Women’s Singles:

Iga wins second Grand Slam Women's singles title in French Open 2022

Iga Swiatek of Poland (Rank 1) defeated Coco Gauff of United States (US) (Rank 13) to win second career Grand Slam title at French open 2022.

  • Swiatek is on a 35-match win streak, tied with Venus Williams (US) for the longest since 2000.
  • Swiatek won the trophy with the prize money of 2.2 million euros.

Mixed Doubles Winners:

The mixed doubles pair Ena Shibahara and Wesley Koolhof clinched the French Open 2022 mixed doubles title by defeating Ulrikke Eikeri and Joren Vliegen in a stunning clash.

  • Shibahara wins her first major title and becomes the first Japanese player in 25 years to win the mixed doubles championship in Paris.
